realme 16 Launching Soon in Nepal: Spec Sheet Raises Questions

Realme has been in the Nepali smartphone market for ages, but it has yet to deliver a phone that truly stands out in its price segment. Could their upcoming realme 16 finally break that streak?

For a bit of background, the realme 16 is a successor to the realme 15, so naturally, you’d expect some upgrades. Is that actually the case? Well, the pricing definitely points in that direction.

What is the Price of realme 16 in Nepal?

The realme 16 has not yet arrived in Nepal. However, the phone is currently selling in India, starting at INR 42,000 (~NPR 67,000). In Malaysia, though, it goes for RM 1,799 (~NPR 64,000), and that’s for a higher variant too. Since Nepal typically follows Southeast Asian pricing rather than Indian variants, that Malaysian price point is likely the better reference here.

With that in mind, the realme 16 price in Nepal could start from Rs. 62,999 (8/128GB), Rs. 66,999 (8/256GB), and Rs. 71,999 (12/256GB).

Quite frankly, realme has been slacking here; the phone launched all the way back in April, and we’re only getting some movement on it now in September. The release may end up even further delayed, but we can reasonably expect the realme 16 to land officially in Nepal before September ends.

realme has always launched either two or three phones from the realme numbered lineup in Nepal. Last year, it was the realme 15T and the 15 Pro. A year before that, there were the realme 14 and 14T. And the realme 12 series had three variants: the 12 Pro, 12 Pro+, and the 12x.

However, breaking that trend, this year they look to be sticking with just the realme 16. Why? Well, who knows.

realme 16 Overview

For the past two generations, the realme numbered series has stuck to a fairly similar design. A rectangular camera module on a boxy frame.

That boxy design hasn’t changed. The realme 16 is still entirely flat. However, the camera module has gotten a major overhaul. The realme 16 now sports a camera bar, the kind you’d typically see on Google Pixel smartphones. But unlike those, the camera bar here sits raised toward the top, much like the iPhone Air.

And realme isn’t even trying to hide the obvious inspiration here, cause they’re literally calling it the “Air Design.” The two color variants of the phone are named Air Black and Air White. Way to go being subtle, realme.

The camera bar also seems to house a three-camera setup, but in reality, there are just two functional cameras, with the third being an IR blaster. On the rightmost side of the camera bar, there’s also a selfie mirror, used to help align yourself when framing a shot with the main camera.

It’s similar to what OPPO Bubble does, but instead of using actual display hardware and software for it, realme has simply used a small fisheye mirror. Quite genius, if you ask me.

That said, its practical use might be a bit limited, since the main camera and the mirror sit on opposite ends of the bar, so framing could still be a bit tricky. But you could at least get a general idea of your positioning from it.

realme also claims it’s got that “flagship-level rounded corner” design, which technically just means uniform bezels around the display. And it does elevate the overall look of the AMOLED panel.

To my surprise, they’ve actually shrunk the display this time, down to 6.57 inches from 6.77 inches previously. It’s still an FHD+ resolution screen though, so there’s no real upgrade from the previous generation on that front.

However, the smaller screen size combined with the same FHD+ resolution means the pixel density has jumped up to 397PPI, almost as sharp as the Samsung S26.

So visually, the sharpness should be very decent, although there are smartphones like the POCO X8 Pro and OnePlus Nord 5 that offer a higher resolution.

But the FHD+ here should be fine, given that the processor will likely have a hard time feeding those extra pixels anyway. It runs the MediaTek Dimensity 6400 chipset, a downgrade compared to the Dimensity 7300+ we got on the realme 15.

And going by its expected price, it seems like realme could be trying to reach for the stars. Cause if you look at the new Redmi Note 17 5G, it comes with the Snapdragon 4 Gen 4, costs a little less than Rs. 50,000, and offers similar performance. So the value proposition for realme 16 looks weak on paper, but we’ll know the full story once realme reveals the actual price.

The phone comes in three memory variants: 8/128GB, 8/256GB, and 12/256GB. However, realme hasn’t confirmed which variant or variants will make it to Nepal.

Moving to optics, the realme numbered series hasn’t had a great camera system ever since the realme 10. But for some reason, that changed with the realme 15, which finally got an ultrawide setup alongside the main camera. And I was genuinely hoping they’d carry that forward to the realme 16.

Sadly, the realme 16 only features a single 50MP camera setup. There is a 2MP monochrome sensor tagging along, but it’s a pretty significant downgrade from the previous ultrawide. It doesn’t end there either; it also doesn’t have OIS, so video footage while walking is going to be noticeably shakier. But hey, at least it still packs a 50MP selfie camera, just like the realme 15, which is respectable.

Aside from the missing ultrawide and OIS, the realme 16’s camera hardware, both front and back, is technically the same as last year. So it should still be able to shoot 4K video like before, right? Wrong.

Because realme has gone with the Dimensity 6400 SoC, which doesn’t support 4K video recording at all, the phone is limited to just 1080p video from both cameras.

But hey, at least the battery capacity remains at 7,000mAh. Though charging speed has been capped at just 60W this time, down from the 80W we got last year.

Lastly, the phone runs Android 16 with realme UI 7 on top. The UI brings features like a Light Glass design, a Misty Glass control center, and a Breathing Dock, which honestly feels a lot like realme borrowing straight from iOS.

Going through everything the realme 16 brings to the table, it’s hard to call this a proper generational upgrade. The chipset takes a step back, the ultrawide camera is gone, OIS has disappeared, charging speed has dropped, and 4K video recording is off the table entirely. On paper, that’s a lot of downgrades for a phone that’s supposed to be moving the lineup forward.

The Air-inspired design and the slightly sharper display are nice touches, and the selfie mirror is a genuinely clever bit of engineering. But design flourishes alone rarely make up for this many spec cuts.

So unless realme prices the 16 aggressively, and I mean genuinely aggressively, it’s going to have a tough time standing out against what’s already available in Nepal at a similar price. We’ll know for sure once realme confirms the Nepal pricing, but right now, the realme 16 has a lot to prove before it can be called a worthy addition to the lineup.
