Redmi 17 4G and 5G Launched in Nepal with a 7,500mAh Battery

Last year, the Redmi 15 was a somewhat underwhelming experience at launch. Compared to its rivals, it wasn’t particularly unique. But after several price hikes pushed many budget phones into a higher price bracket, the Redmi 15 somehow came out on top and became one of my favorite phones around the Rs. 20,000–30,000 mark. So, I’m pretty excited for the new Redmi 17.

This time around, there are two Redmi 17s. Xiaomi Nepal has launched both the Redmi 17 5G and Redmi 17 4G in Nepal.

So, the big question here is: can the Redmi 17 top the Redmi 15 in terms of value?

Now that we have the Nepali pricing, this question is much easier to answer. Some changes here feel like a step forward, while others feel like a step back. The Redmi 17 4G starts at the same Rs. 27,999 as its predecessor, but with less RAM, the value proposition is certainly not as straightforward as it was with the Redmi 15.

Redmi 17 Overview

Every year, the Redmi Numbered series has featured a new design, and this year is no different. The Redmi 17 5G and 4G share the same overall design, with a slightly shorter camera module this time around. It also gets a dual camera cutout, compared to the triple camera cutout we saw on the Redmi15 last year.

One of the more interesting additions this year is the Dynamic Light on the back. It uses white, red, and green LED lighting to show different statuses, including notifications, charging progress, gaming effects, and even camera activity. It’s not something you’ll necessarily use every day, but it does give the Redmi 17 a bit more personality.

The phones are completely flat, like most smartphones we’ve seen this year, and Redmi retains the plastic body. I guess that’s not changing anytime soon with budget phones, since plastic keeps costs down. It’s also good to see that the phones are still IP64 rated.

The main difference between the 5G and 4G variants comes down to the color options. Both models are available in Black and Deep Blue, while the 4G gets two additional finishes: Lotus Purple and Oak Green. These variants have a bit of texture to them, giving them a more distinctive look. The Oak Green variant also gets a differently colored frame and camera module, and the contrast works really well.

The 5G, meanwhile, gets a Vivid Orange variant with an eco-leather back, along with a differently colored frame and camera module that complement the orange finish.

While Redmi may have upped the design game with the Redmi 17, the display definitely took a major cutback, dropping from an FHD+ resolution to just HD+. With this downgrade, the Redmi 17 feels more like an entry-level phone, despite likely carrying a budget-level price tag. However, this downgrade feels even more significant on the Redmi 17 5G, which carries an even higher price tag.

To make matters worse, both phones still have the same 6.9-inch screen, which means the pixel density dropped from 374PPI on the Redmi 15 to just 254PPI on the Redmi 17, meaning text and icons won’t look nearly as sharp as they did on last year’s model.

One area where Redmi has made an upgrade is display protection. Both the Redmi 17 4G and 5G now come with Corning Gorilla Glass 7i.

For performance, the 4G variant runs on the MediaTek Helio G91 Ultra. It’s a capable entry-level chipset, but there’s nothing particularly new about it. In fact, the same G91 Ultra was already used on the Redmi 13 two generations ago, so seeing it again on the Redmi 17 feels like Redmi is playing it safe rather than pushing performance forward.

The Redmi 17 5G, on the other hand, gets the newer Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chipset.

For memory, the phone comes with up to 6GB RAM and 256GB storage, another downgrade from the Redmi 15, which was available up to 8/256GB. But given the RAM shortage we’re still dealing with near the end of 2026, this isn’t all that surprising. Also, the Redmi 17 5G gets faster UFS 2.2 storage, while the 4G variant uses the considerably slower eMMC 5.1.

As for the Nepali variants, both the Redmi 17 4G and 5G are available in 4/128GB and 6/128GB configurations. However, the 5G model gets an additional 6/256GB variant.

Moving to the camera, it’s the same setup as last year: a 50MP main sensor with an 8MP selfie shooter.

If there’s one area where the Redmi 17 really shines, it’s the battery. Xiaomi has upped its game from 7,000mAh on the Redmi 15 to 7,500mAh this time. On top of that, you get 45W fast charging support and even 22.5W reverse wired charging.

So between the massive battery and the reverse charging, you basically get a power bank that can also charge your other devices.

Lastly, on the software side, the Redmi 17 ships with Android 16 out of the box, layered with Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3 skin.

The Redmi 17 is a phone of trade-offs. The jump to a bigger 7,500mAh battery with 45W charging and 22.5W reverse charging is a genuine win, and it’s the kind of upgrade that actually matters in daily use. But the move to an HD+ display feels like a clear step backward, especially when the Redmi 15 already offered an FHD+ 144Hz panel.

The 4G variant’s Helio G91 Ultra also doesn’t feel like much of an upgrade, especially when the same chipset was already used on the Redmi 13 two generations ago. Likewise, there’s no meaningful camera upgrade, with both variants sticking to a 50MP main camera and 8MP selfie camera.

And then there’s the pricing. At Rs. 27,999, the Redmi 17 4G starts at the same price as the Redmi 15, but now comes with just 4GB RAM instead of 6GB. The Redmi 17 5G is a more interesting proposition at Rs. 33,999, especially with the newer Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chipset, UFS 2.2 storage, and 5G connectivity.
