Budget King Redmi Note 17 4G and 5G Launched in Nepal with a 7,700mAh Battery

The two base models of the Redmi Note series have always offered the best value for money. It was the go-to option for budget-constrained buyers who wanted the best specs at the lowest price. This time, the two base models are called the Redmi Note 17 and the Redmi Note 17 5G.

Both phones are successors to the Redmi Note 15 and the Redmi Note 15 5G. I know, confusing, since Xiaomi has jumped an entire generation. But the pricing is even more confusing.

What is the Price of Redmi Note 17 in Nepal?

The previous generation of the Redmi Note series was one of the first phones to get hit by the price hike wave, and it was awful. It was especially awful for the Redmi Note 15 and the Note 15 5G variant, as the phones launched with a massive price tag of Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 40,000, respectively.

This time, it’s even worse. The Redmi Note 17 price in Nepal starts at Rs. 42,999 for the 6/128GB variant and Rs. 47,999 for the 8/256GB model. Likewise, the Redmi Note 17 5G starts at Rs. 47,999 (6/128GB) and Rs. 52,999 (8/256GB).

So basically, the starting price for the 4G model was raised by Rs. 13,000, while the 5G variant was raised by Rs. 7,000, and that too with a lower memory configuration.

Both phones have already launched in Nepal and are available via authorized Xiaomi stores across the country.

Last time, the Redmi Note 15’s 4G and 5G variants were two completely different smartphones. The two phones felt different in hand, had different camera systems, different protection ratings, and different battery numbers.

This time, though, the Redmi Note 17 4G and 5G look identical. So is there any real change to the internal components, or is the only difference that one runs a 4G chipset while the other runs 5G? Let’s jump into the overview.

Redmi Note 17 Overview

As I said, the Redmi Note 17 and the Note 17 5G look identical to one another. The dimensions are the exact same, along with the left-aligned square camera module.

Compared to its predecessor, it’s a complete redesign. The Redmi Note 15 series had a huge center-aligned camera module with four cutouts, one being the flash.

This time, there are just two camera cutouts aligned vertically, with one being the flash. Another major change compared to the predecessor is that there’s no curve this time. It’s a completely flat smartphone, with a flat back and flat frame. And considering these are technically “budget” smartphones despite the pricing, it’s no surprise that the phones are entirely plastic, aside from the glass front.

As for protection, it’s a bit of a good news, bad news situation. Both the Note 17 4G and 5G are IP65 rated this time. While this is an upgrade for the 4G variant, as last time it only got an IP64 rating, the 5G model is a downgrade, as it had IP66 last time.

Moving to the display, I was quite shocked to see that Xiaomi still retained a 120Hz FHD+ display for both the Redmi Note 17 4G and 5G. Seeing most smartphone companies switch to HD+ across almost their entire budget lineup, I was genuinely fearing Xiaomi would follow suit. Thankfully, that’s not the case here.

The screen is also bigger this time, a massive 6.99-inch AMOLED panel, up from 6.77 inches. So it’ll definitely feel like you’ve got an S26 Ultra in your pocket, at least size-wise.

Moving to performance, the 4G variant features the Snapdragon 6s 4G Gen 2, while the 5G variant runs the Snapdragon 4 Gen 4.

Compared to the Redmi Note 15 4G variant, which ran the MediaTek Helio G100, the Snapdragon 6s 4G Gen 2 on the Note 17 should offer similar performance. However, the 5G variant takes a real step back, cause last time the Note 15 5G had the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, a far superior chipset compared to the Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 here. So you can expect a noticeable dip in raw performance on the 5G model this time around.

The same goes for memory configuration. Both the 4G and 5G variants of the Note 17 come in 6/128GB and 8/256GB options. For the 4G variant, that’s not a surprise, since it’s the same config we got last year. However, for the 5G model, the Note 15 5G started at 8/256GB and went all the way up to 12/512GB. So this time, the Redmi Note 17 5G feels like a genuine step down on the memory front.

That’s not all though, there’s a notable downgrade in the camera department as well. While the camera on the predecessor Note 15 wasn’t amazing, the 5G variant at least had an ultrawide lens. That’s gone on the Note 17 5G, which now only has a single 50MP rear camera. In fact, the 4G variant features the same 50MP single-camera setup too, but that’s not as big a deal here since we got the same setup last time as well.

Worth noting, the Note 15 5G had a 108MP main camera, so even the headline megapixel count has taken a hit this generation. The selfie camera is a downgrade too, a 16MP shooter, down from 20MP last time.

But hey, at least the battery is impressive, with a 7,700mAh unit. That’s about a 30% upgrade over the previous 6,000mAh on the Note 15 4G, and a 40% jump over the 5,520mAh on the Note 15 5G. And to charge that massive unit, it supports 45W wired charging along with 22.5W reverse wired charging.

The phone boots on Android 16 with HyperOS 3, and Xiaomi promises four years of OS updates and six years of security updates.

On Android 16, it is a bit of an older version now, given Android 17 is already out. But Xiaomi has always launched the Redmi Note series a generation behind on Android version, so that’s not really a surprise. And there’s HyperOS 3 layered on top of Android 16.

The base Redmi Note smartphones used to offer some of the best value for money. But with the current pricing, that’s clearly not the case anymore. And it’s not like the higher price comes with better specs. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Compared to last year, the specs have actually gotten worse while the price has gone up. That’s pretty much the worst combination you can ask for.

And like Xiaomi, most brands these days seem to be offering only one major upgrade without skyrocketing the price: battery life. To be fair, that’s where this phone does well. But the rest of the package, especially the processor and cameras, feels rather entry-level for the price.

So, unless battery life alone is enough to win you over, the value proposition that made the Redmi Note series so popular in the first place feels noticeably weaker this time around.
