Should You Buy?

If you’re looking for a great all-rounder in the Rs. 20,000 price range, the HMD Crest is easily one of the better choices, and there are several reasons why.

The biggest highlight is its OLED display, which is genuinely impressive at this price. Most rivals still stick to IPS panels, so getting an OLED here gives the Crest a clear edge in contrast and overall viewing experience. And it doesn’t stop there; the performance is quite solid, too.

The phone runs on the UNISOC T760 chipset. While UNISOC chips are often underestimated, this one is a capable 5G processor that can go head-to-head with popular 4G chipsets like the Helio G99. For everyday use and even some light gaming, it holds up well.

So in terms of display quality and performance, the HMD Crest has its bases covered. If those two aspects matter most to you, it’s one of the strongest options in this segment.

That said, it’s not without its downsides. Despite the OLED panel, the refresh rate is limited to 90Hz. The camera setup is fairly average and doesn’t really stand out. And since the phone was launched almost a year ago, it’s starting to feel a bit dated, especially considering it ships with Android 14 out of the box.

Just like the HMD Crest, the Crest Max is another decent offering from HMD. It addresses some of the missed opportunities of the original Crest, most notably by adding a proper triple-camera setup that includes a main camera, an ultrawide lens, and even a macro camera.

However, that’s where most of the upgrades end. The FHD+ OLED panel that once made the HMD Crest stand out no longer feels special at this price point, as several rivals now offer even better displays. On top of that, it’s still a 90Hz panel, and in this segment, 120Hz screens are becoming increasingly common.

Just like the Crest, the Crest Max also boots on Android 14, which is starting to feel outdated and becomes another drawback.

That said, despite these shortcomings, the HMD Crest Max still manages to hold its ground in the sub-Rs. 25,000 segment, largely thanks to the UNISOC T760. The biggest advantage here is that it’s a 5G chipset—something that’s usually reserved for phones priced above Rs. 25,000. And because of that, the HMD Crest Max still offers solid value for money under this price bracket, especially if you value raw performance.

One major limitation of the HMD Crest Max is its 90Hz display, something alternatives like the Infinix Hot 60 Pro and Redmi 15 clearly address.

Starting with the Infinix Hot 60 Pro, it offers a stunning 1.5K AMOLED display with a refresh rate that goes all the way up to 144Hz. That easily makes it the best display you can get at this price.

In terms of raw performance, it does fall slightly behind the HMD Crest Max since it uses a 4G chipset. That means you’ll be compromising a bit on performance, but credit where it’s due, the Helio G200 is a capable 4G chip and an upgraded version of the popular Helio G99.

The Hot 60 Pro also pulls ahead in charging, offering 45W fast charging, which is noticeably better than what the Crest Max provides.

Next up is the Redmi 15, which runs on the Snapdragon 685. To be honest, this chipset performs worse than both the Hot 60 Pro and the Crest Max. However, where the Redmi 15 shines is battery life—it packs a massive 7,000mAh battery, which is significantly larger than what you get on either the Hot 60 Pro or the Crest Max.
