Rising smartphone prices, brands cutting corners, and subpar hardware. This is the “New Normal” in the smartphone market. And Tecno is set to launch a new phone, the Pova 8 5G, in Nepal that doesn’t look so normal.

Tecno has always experimented with the Pova lineup. The phones feature unique designs, and we saw that recently with the Pova Curve 2 as well. The Pova 8 follows the same approach, but beyond its flashy design, can it actually beat the “New Normal”?

What is the Price of Tecno Pova 8 5G in Nepal?

The Tecno Pova 8 was recently launched in India with a starting at INR 29,999 for the 6GB + 128GB variant. If we convert that to NPR, it’s roughly equal to Rs. 47,700. Based on that, we expect the Tecno Pova 8 5G price in Nepal to start around Rs. 52,000.

For context, the Pova Curve 2 also launched in India at INR 29,999 for the 8GB + 256GB variant, and it is currently available in Nepal for Rs. 52,000. So, we expect the Pova 8 to arrive with a similar price tag.

Now that we have discussed the expected pricing, let’s see if Pova 8 beats the “New Normal” or does it end up becoming a part of it? Let’s start with the design, which is at least not normal.

Tecno Pova 8 5G Overview

The Pova 7 introduced Tecno’s “Interstellar Spaceship Design” language, and the Pova 8 continues with the same aesthetic. While the overall look remains familiar, there are a few subtle refinements and one major addition: the Alive Matrix Display.

It features a Dot-LED array that lights up for incoming calls, messages, notifications, charging status, the battery level, and other system alerts. There’s no denying that the Pova 8 takes heavy inspiration from Nothing’s Glyph Interface.

The rear plastic panel has a distinct sci-fi appearance. However, the IP64 rating feels underwhelming at this price. It is available in four colors: Arc White, Echo Green, Graphite Black, and Helios Orange.

On the front, the Pova 8 sports a 6.76-inch FHD display with a 144Hz refresh rate. While that sounds impressive on paper, it’s still an IPS panel, which is disappointing considering its expected price. The 950 nits High Brightness Mode (HBM) is nothing extraordinary either.

As we get into the actual hardware, we begin to see the “New Normal.” The Pova 8 is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7100 chipset, which is actually a downgrade from the Dimensity 7300 Ultimate found on the Pova 7.

Tecno has also cut corners when it comes to memory. The Pova 7 offered 8GB of RAM on both the 128GB and 256GB variants. In contrast, the base 128GB variant of the Pova 8 comes with just 6GB of RAM, with 8GB reserved for the higher storage model.

Moving on to the cameras, the Pova 8 features a single 50MP rear camera and a 13MP selfie camera. While the absence of an ultrawide sensor is a significant drawback at this price, Tecno has at least equipped the main camera with Sony’s LYTIA 600 sensor, which has the potential to deliver good image quality.

However, there’s another compromise. Due to the limitations of the Dimensity 7100 chipset, the main camera is capped at 1440p 30 fps video recording rather than 4K.

Except for design, the Pova 8 does feel different than normal interms of battery life. It packs a massive 8000mAh battery and 45W fast charging.

On the software front, the Pova 8 runs HiOS 16 based on Android 16. It brings features like Depth Effects for the lock screen, improved cross-device sharing, and AI-powered additions such as Image-to-Theme and AI Live Wallpaper. Tecno is also promising two years of Android OS updates and three years of security patches.

Pova 8 has a distinctive design, an eye-catching Alive Matrix Display, and an enormous 8,000mAh battery that genuinely stands out. However, once you look past those highlights, the phone starts to feel very familiar.

A downgraded chipset, 6GB RAM on the base variant, an IPS display, the lack of an ultrawide camera, and limited video recording capabilities make it difficult to call the Pova 8 a true game-changer. Most of its hardware is either on par with or behind the competition.

If the expected price of around Rs. 52,000 turns out to be accurate, the Pova 8 will have a tough time standing out against rivals that offer brighter AMOLED displays, faster chipsets, and more versatile camera systems.
