Tecno Pova 8 5G Launched in Nepal: Can It Escape the “New Normal”?

Rising smartphone prices, brands cutting corners, and subpar hardware. This is the “New Normal” in today’s smartphone market. But Tecno’s newly launched Pova 8 5G in Nepal is anything but normal.

Tecno has always experimented with the Pova lineup. The phones feature unique designs, and we saw that recently with the Pova Curve 2 as well. The Pova 8 follows the same approach, but beyond its flashy design, can it actually beat the “New Normal”?

At this price, the Pova 8 has plenty to prove. Let’s start with the Pova 8’s design, which definitely knows how to grab attention.

Tecno Pova 8 5G Overview

The Pova 7 introduced Tecno’s “Interstellar Spaceship Design” language, and the Pova 8 continues with the same aesthetic. While the overall look remains familiar, there are a few subtle refinements and one major addition: the Alive Matrix Display.

It features a Dot-LED array that lights up for incoming calls, messages, notifications, charging status, the battery level, and other system alerts. There’s no denying that the Pova 8 takes heavy inspiration from Nothing’s Glyph Interface.

The rear plastic panel has a distinct sci-fi appearance. However, the IP64 rating feels underwhelming at this price. It is available in four colors: Arc White, Echo Green, Graphite Black, and Helios Orange.

On the front, the Pova 8 sports a 6.76-inch FHD+ display with a 144Hz refresh rate. While that sounds impressive on paper, it’s still an IPS panel, which is disappointing considering its price. The 950 nits High Brightness Mode (HBM) is nothing extraordinary either.

As we get into the actual hardware, we begin to see the “New Normal.” The Pova 8 is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7100 chipset, which is actually a downgrade from the Dimensity 7300 Ultimate found on the Pova 7.

There’s nothing wrong with the chipset itself, but at the Pova 8’s asking price, it becomes a concern. For context, Tecno’s sister brand Infinix uses the same Dimensity 7100 in the Note Edge, which launched in Nepal at just Rs. 41,999.

Moving on to the cameras, the Pova 8 features a single 50MP rear camera and a 13MP selfie camera. While the absence of an ultrawide sensor is a significant drawback at this price, Tecno has at least equipped the main camera with Sony’s LYTIA 600 sensor, which has the potential to deliver good image quality.

However, there’s another compromise. Due to the limitations of the Dimensity 7100 chipset, the main camera is capped at 1440p 30 fps video recording rather than 4K.

Except for design, the Pova 8 does feel different from normal in terms of battery life. It packs a massive 8000mAh battery and 45W fast charging, which is great and all. But if the battery optimization on this phone is similar to its Curve 2 sibling, then it is just a number on the spec sheet, because that phone did not feel like it had an 8000mAh battery when I tested it.

On the software front, the Pova 8 runs HiOS 16 based on Android 16. It brings features like Depth Effects for the lock screen, improved cross-device sharing, and AI-powered additions such as Image-to-Theme and AI Live Wallpaper. Tecno is also promising two years of Android OS updates and three years of security patches.

Pova 8 has a distinctive design, an eye-catching Alive Matrix Display, and an enormous 8,000mAh battery that genuinely stands out. However, once you look past those highlights, the phone starts to feel very familiar.

It is just the Tecno Pova Curve 2 with a higher price tag for an LCD screen. So it should be obvious: if you are going to get a Tecno phone, the Pova Curve 2 is the way to go instead of this phone.

Now here is the bitter part — even the Curve 2 does not cut it as a logical purchase when phones like Nothing Phone (4a), POCO X8 Pro, and Infinix GT 30 Pro are all floating around at a similar or slightly higher price point. So, it appears that despite its non-normal design and specs, the Tecno Pova 8 5G is also part of the “New Normal” in the smartphone market.
