HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro price in Nepal could start at Rs. 69,999 for the 8/128GB variant.
  • The phone runs on the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 with up to 12GB RAM.

Ever since the first Nothing Phone (1) launched, Nothing’s smartphones have been a fan favorite among tech enthusiasts. And now, the company has unveiled the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro alongside the Nothing Phone (4a). In this article, we’ll primarily focus on the Phone (4a) Pro.

The Phone (4a) Pro steps in to replace its predecessor, the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro, as Nothing’s new semi-premium offering. And this time around, Nothing has introduced a few notable changes, so let’s take a closer look at what’s new.

Looking back at the predecessors, the Nothing Phone (3a) and Nothing Phone (3a) Pro both ran on the same processor, which is fairly common for base and Pro variants of a smartphone lineup. However, this meant the Phone (3a) delivered excellent price-to-performance value, while the same couldn’t quite be said for the Phone (3a) Pro.

To justify the higher price, Nothing equipped the Phone (3a) Pro with a periscope telephoto camera, a feature that was missing on the standard Phone (3a).

This year, however, that trend seems to be changing for the better. How exactly? Let’s dive in and find out.

Nothing Phone (4a) Pro Overview

The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro does something unique that we haven’t seen on a Nothing smartphone before—the iconic transparent back is now replaced with an aluminum back, along with an aluminum frame. However, a few remnants of the transparent aesthetic remain around the camera plateau, which seems to be the talking point in the smartphone industry right now.

This plateau houses a triple-camera setup arranged in a rather unusual way. But then again, it still looks somewhat symmetrical compared to the design atrocity we saw on the Nothing Phone (3). The Glyph Matrix also makes a comeback on the Phone (4a) Pro, featuring 137 individually addressable mini-LEDs, behaving similarly to the one found on the Nothing Phone (3).

It’s also the slimmest Nothing phone yet, measuring just 7.9mm in thickness. And just like the Nothing Phone (4a), the Pro variant also adopts the new button configuration, with volume rocker and power button on the right and Essential Key on the left.

The display looks very impressive. The resolution has been upgraded to 1.5K from 1080p, which was much needed. It’s an AMOLED panel, so colors should be vibrant and accurate. And with a 144Hz refresh rate, the UI and visuals should feel buttery smooth.

Nothing has also improved things in the protection department, offering Gorilla Glass 7i along with an IP65 rating. Sure, IP65 isn’t the most impressive rating out there, but seeing Nothing upgrade its semi-premium lineup from Panda Glass to Gorilla Glass is definitely a welcome change.

Last year, both phones shipped with the same chipset, which made the Nothing Phone (3a) a better value for money than the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro. This time, however, the story is different. Unlike the Phone (4a), performance on the Phone (4a) Pro is handled by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4, paired with 8GB or 12GB of RAM. The 8GB variant comes with 128GB or 256GB storage, while the 12GB model is limited to 256GB.

Battery capacity remains the same across both the Phone (4a) and Phone (4a) Pro, with 5,080mAh for the international variant and 5,400mAh for the Indian version, which will likely make its way to Nepal as well. Sadly, wireless charging is still missing.

For optics, the 50MP main camera and 8MP ultrawide remain unchanged. However, the 50MP periscope telephoto can now zoom up to 3.5x optically. That said, there are a few compromises. The sensor size has been reduced to 1/2.75″ from 1/1.95″, and the aperture now sits at ƒ/2.88, a noticeable downgrade from ƒ/2.6.

There are also a few other disappointments. Despite using the 7 Gen 4, the Phone (4a) Pro can only record up to 4K at 30fps. For comparison, the Vivo V70, which runs the same chipset, supports 4K video at 60fps, putting the Phone (4a) Pro at a slight disadvantage.

Lastly, Nothing OS continues to be one of the cleanest Android experiences around, with minimal bloatware and a very minimalistic design. The Phone (4a) Pro ships with Android 16 layered with Nothing OS 4.1. Software support includes three years of Android upgrades and six years of security patches.

Last year, the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro fell a bit short on the display front. Despite being positioned as a semi-premium device, the 1080p panel felt like a curveball. Thankfully, the display has finally received a much-needed upgrade, and it looks promising.

Besides that, performance seems solid, and while the battery could be better, it’s certainly not a dealbreaker. The design is different this time, but it still carries those unmistakable “Nothing” vibes.

All in all, it looks like Nothing has addressed many of the shortcomings of its predecessor and delivered a fairly compelling mid-ranger with the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro. Now all it needs is aggressive pricing to truly stand out in an already crowded segment.
