Tecno Phantom V Fold Overview

Design

The Tecno Phantom V Fold is a foldable phone with a design philosophy quite similar to that of the Z Fold 5. It features a foldable screen on the inside with a cover screen on the outside. The phone comes with an Aerospace-grade drop-shaped hinge which makes the fold virtually seamless and crease-free.

Tecno has developed a reverse snap structure for increased structural stability for the phone. When folded, the phone gets pretty thick at 14mm but that is a side-effect users of foldable will have to just deal with.

The frames are made of Aluminum while the back is plastic. Inspired by the cosmic, the back panel design is pretty minimal and the subtle curves make the phone comfortable when held. The phone features stereo speakers and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Display

When unfolded the large 7.85-inch AMOLED is a multimedia dream. The 2K+ resolution 120Hz panel supports 1B colors and gets a peak brightness of 1100nits. Furthermore, the display uses LTPO technology to adapt the refresh rate between 10-120Hz.

The cover screen is equally impressive. It’s another LTPO AMOLED with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1100nits of peak brightness. In a similar fashion, the cover screen also dynamically adjusts between 10-120Hz refresh rate. Protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, the cover display supports 1B colors as well.

Both panels have a 100% P3 color gamut and the touch sampling rate on the main panel is 240Hz whereas the touch sampling rate on the cover display is 360Hz. The phone is kitted to the maximum in the display department.

Hardware

Under the hood of this media monster is MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000+ (4nm) chipset. It is a top-tier flagship grade octa-core processor (1×3.20 GHz Cortex-X2 & 3×2.85 GHz Cortex-A710 & 4×1.80 GHz Cortex-A510) with Mali-G710 MC10 to handle the graphical side of things.

The phone features LPDDR5X 12GB RAM and UFS3.1 256/512GB of storage. UFS 4.0 would’ve been better for performance but perhaps to keep the costs down, they opted for the UFS 3.1.

Camera

In the camera department, the phone features a triple camera setup. The primary camera is a 50MP f1.9 sensor with PDAF. The other two include a 50MP f2.0 telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and a 13MP ultrawide sensor with 120° FOV. The phone can shoot up to 4K@30fps videos only which is a letdown.

The front has a 16MP f2.5 camera on the main screen. The cover screen of the phone features a 32MP UHD under-display camera as well. To give the subject more control, the cover display can be used as a preview screen when shooting with the rear cameras.

Battery and OS

The phone has a massive 5000mAh battery with support for 45W wired charging and Tecno claims you can fully charge the phone in under an hour.

The smartphone runs on Android 13, out of the box, with HIOS 13 Fold running on top. The company has claimed that over 2000 apps have been adapted for the big screen and they are still increasing app support for Split screen and Multi Windows mode.
