Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Overview

Design

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 brings some pretty massive changes in the design section. The cover screen has gotten a size up, 3.78 times the previous generation to be precise, and offers a wide range of new capabilities which makes the phone more practical in its closed state.

The hinge has been redesigned and is now gapless when the phone is shut. Samsung calls it the zero-gap flex hinge but the crease is still somewhat visible. Still, Samsung has really made a huge improvement from the Flip 4.

The phone is IPX8 rated and features an armor aluminum frame with tougher drop and scratch resistance, or so they advertise.

Samsung has dedicated itself to using recycled materials and has 15 device components that feature a minimum of 10% post-consumer recycled material plastic or pre-consumer recycled aluminum.

Display

Let’s talk about that cover display first. It’s larger than ever now, at 3.4 inches, and has a resolution of 720 x 748 pixels. The phone has a SUPER AMOLED panel and has Gorilla Glass Victus for protection. It’s a shame that the cover display is only 60Hz, as Motorola offers 144Hz on the Razr 40 Ultra. The display however does get bright at 1600 nits peak brightness and is the first in the Galaxy Z Flip series with a proximity sensor.

The main display is a 6.7 inches Foldable Dynamic AMOLED with a 120Hz refresh rate. The display supports HDR10+ and can get to a peak brightness of 1750nits. There hasn’t been much of an improvement to the display from the Flip 4 but it already was flagship quality.

Hardware

The phone comes with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (4nm) chipset. It’s an Octa-core (1×3.2 GHz Cortex-X3 & 2×2.8 GHz Cortex-A715 & 2×2.8 GHz Cortex-A710 & 3×2.0 GHz Cortex-A510) and features the Adreno 740 for graphics.

Talking about storage, the phone starts from 256GB and goes up to 512GB with 8GB of RAM on both variants. The storage technology is UFS 4.0 so the phone will be snappy and there should be no issues using it. Only the 256GB variant is available in Nepal.

Camera

The Galaxy Flip 5 features a dual camera setup. The main camera is a 12MP f1.8 shooter with an 83° FOV and supports OIS and has dual-pixel AF.

The ultra-wide is also a 12MP shooter at f2.2 with 123° FOV. The phone supports videos up to 4K@60fps and also supports HDR10+ video capture. The phone also supports Auto-Framing in Video mode which must be enabled before recording. This feature automatically switches between the lenses to capture all subjects accordingly.

The front camera is a 10MP f2.2 shooter with 4K@30fps video capability. Samsung has not made many improvements in the camera department from last-gen’s Flip 4.

Battery and OS

The phone comes with a 3700mAh battery and supports 25W wired charging. It takes around 30 mins for a 50% charge, or so Samsung claims. Samsung as usual will not be providing the charger in the box and is sold separately.

The phone also comes with 15W wireless and 4.5W reverse wireless charging support.

It runs Android 13 out of the box with One UI 5.1 on top.
