The smartphone market has been more or less stagnant for the past 2 years. Manufacturers are racing to make a bigger, more powerful bar with little innovation to startle the consumers. The Galaxy S9 looks eerily similar to the Galaxy S8; iPhones design haven’t changed in past three years with the exception of the iPhone X. The industry barely manages to grab customer’s attention with weird trends like the notches. But that seems to about to change because yesterday, OPPO launched a phone named Find X.
When you glance at the Find X for the first time, it looks like an S9 with its curvy design and minimal bezels. But when you start really looking, you see that the chin is pretty much non-existent, and there is no forehead or a notch. What sorcery is this? Then you want to take the phone in your hands, play with it a little. You want to see and feel this marvelous beauty up close that boasts a 92% screen to body ratio. You want to find the camera that is lurking out of your sight. And when you do that, when you open the camera app, the magic happens.
The entire top of the screen comes off a little to reveal the front camera and the rear camera. The action is so smooth that you won’t believe it until you see it in action. There’s no two seconds delay. No waiting for the moving part to be finally ready and lock in place. It feels instantaneous and you light up, you open and close the camera app in a continuous loop until your heart is content that what you are seeing is real. The joy you feel; you didn’t know you wanted it until you had it in your hands. You forget Apples and Samsungs. You know the only phone you want to buy is the Find X.
After that momentary lapse of concentration, you use the phone a little more and see that it is snappy but has the icons and launcher typical of Chinese manufacturers. You find the spec list, see that the phone has a top of the line Snapdragon 845 chipset, a 6.42 inches 1,080 x 2,340 AMOLED screen, 8GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage.
What is not to love about this phone? Maybe the fact that it still hasn’t been launched (so you don’t know the exact price), or there is no headphone jack, or there is no fingerprint sensor, not on the back, not under the screen. The OPPO Find X uses infrared cameras to make a 3D image of your face and uses face unlocking as the only biometric unlocking mechanism available on the phone. Every time you unlock the phone, the top swiftly comes out of its hideout, scans your face, gives you access to your phone, and goes into hiding again to leave you with the beautiful all-screen experience. Who needs a notch?
