BYD Dolphin Overview
Exterior
The BYD Dolphin is part of BYD’s Ocean Series, and its design follows the brand’s “Ocean Aesthetics” language, developed by renowned automotive designer Wolfgang Egger.
This theme is especially noticeable at the front, where the integrated lighting elements dominate the look. The LED headlamps sit beside a patterned grille, while a continuous DRL runs along the bottom, creating a glowing effect for the “BYD” logo at the center. For 2025, BYD has also improved the brightness of the headlights for better visibility.
The bonnet smoothly blends into the grille section with only minimal contouring. Down below, the bumper gets stylish cladding and functional air intakes to aid ventilation.
From the side, the Dolphin has a clean and simple look. Character lines break up the surfaces, with noticeable design cues around the charging port on the front right fender, door panels, and flush door handles. The roofline slopes gently into the C-pillar, giving the car a sleek profile. Thanks to its short front and rear overhangs and long wheelbase, the Dolphin not only looks more stretched out than typical hatchbacks but also benefits from a roomier cabin.
It rides on 16-inch alloy wheels, which suit the car well. However, upgrading to a slightly larger set like 205/55 R17 tires could improve both aesthetics and practicality. The bigger wheels might also ease concerns about the Dolphin’s relatively low ground clearance, a point some buyers often raise, without significantly affecting driving range.
At the back, the rear gets a distinctive look with full-width LED taillights featuring dolphin tail-inspired polylines at the ends. Staying true to its hatchback form, the rear door opens up to reveal generous boot space, making it practical for everyday use.
Interior
Inside, the cabin feels bold yet minimalist. The design isn’t for everyone, but it certainly makes a statement. There’s a generous use of hard plastics, but the layout remains visually appealing. A large 12.8-inch Rotating Touchscreen dominates the center of the dashboard and takes care of infotainment needs. Just below it, a row of physical buttons controls the HVAC system. The gear selector sits in an unusual spot, which might take some getting used to. That said, once you’re familiar with it, the discreet placement can actually be a pleasant surprise.
Further down, you’ll find neatly positioned USB charging ports, as well as Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) and Auto Hold buttons. The three-spoke steering wheel includes mounted controls for easy access, while the 5-inch Digital Instrument Cluster keeps things simple and functional. Unlike some brands that overcomplicate their cluster designs, BYD sticks to the basics here, trusting the infotainment screen to handle the rest.

One area where the Dolphin shows signs of cost-cutting is in the seating department. While the seats are wrapped in leatherette, they don’t offer power adjustment or ventilation, which could be missed by users looking for a more premium experience.
Additionally, the BYD Dolphin is available in Ski White, Urban Grey, and the newly added Atlantis Grey color options in the 2025 model.
Performance
BYD Dolphin is powered by a 70 kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor that generates a max power of 95 PS and a max torque of 180 Nm.
It is supported by a 44.9 kWh Blade Battery and has a WLTP-claimed range of 340 km. Moreover, it comes with a 7 kW AC Charger that can charge the vehicle from 0 to 100% in around 7 hours. Also, the Dolphin supports 60 kW of DC Fast charging that charge the vehicle from 10% to 80% in around 35 minutes.
Additionally, the BYD Dolphin can achieve a top speed of 150 kmph and can accelerate from 0 to 100 Kmph in just 12.3 seconds!
Additional Details
McPherson Strut and Torsion Beam handle suspension duties. The latest update tweaks the suspension setup slightly, giving it a sportier feel overall.
The dimensions are 4290 mm in length, 1770 mm in width, and 1570 mm in height. Moreover, the wheelbase sits at 2700mm.
BYD Dolphin gets a 175mm ground clearance. And, the kerb weight is 1758kg.
Additionally, the boot space is 345 liters which can be expanded to 1310 liters.

What’s New on the 2025 BYD Dolphin?
The biggest change in the 2025 BYD Dolphin isn’t in the main battery, but rather in the Low Voltage Battery (LVB). This smaller battery powers essential electrical components that run on lower voltage. Instead of the traditional lead-acid unit, BYD has now equipped the Dolphin with an LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery for this role.
Switching to an LFP LVB brings some clear advantages. It’s designed to last up to 15 years, significantly outliving standard lead-acid batteries.
However, the paper warranty for this battery is 6 years or 150,000 km. Despite this upgrade, BYD Nepal hasn’t increased the price of the Dolphin, which is a pleasant surprise given the added value.
Aside from the battery, the 2025 Dolphin also gets a few thoughtful upgrades. The suspension has been slightly tweaked to deliver a sportier ride, while the LED headlights now offer better brightness. The HVAC system sees improvements too.
On top of that, BYD has added convenient features like a Mobile Phone NFC Key, Bluetooth Key, and a Passenger Door Switch. And to top it all off, there’s a new paint option available, i.e., Atlantis Grey.

With nearly 2500 Dolphins already on Nepali roads, it’s easy to see just how popular and well-received the BYD Dolphin has become. That number alone says a lot and it’s one of the clearest indicators of the car’s appeal and acceptance in the market.
Adding to its credibility, BYD Nepal backs the Dolphin with an industry-leading 10-year (or 200,000 km) warranty on both the battery and the motor. That level of long-term assurance gives owners real peace of mind, and it shows BYD’s confidence in the product.

Rivals
In terms of competition, BYD Dolphin rivals the MG4 EV.
The MG4 EV and BYD Dolphin both stand out in the electric hatchback segment, but they appeal to different types of drivers. The BYD Dolphin focuses on comfort and design, offering a more polished interior with better materials and a layout that’s easy to navigate, even if it feels a bit busy at times. It clearly aims to fix a few of the shortcomings often found in rivals like the MG4.
However, the MG4 isn’t without its own advantages. It’s the more spirited of the two, thanks to its punchy 99 kW motor, which gives it a noticeable edge over the Dolphin’s 70 kW unit. On top of that, the MG4 weighs less and has a RWD setup, making it more agile and fun to drive.
Even its entry-level variant comes with a larger 51 kWh battery, delivering a WLTP range of around 350 km, slightly more than the Dolphin’s 44.9 kWh pack and 340 km estimate.
While BYD’s Blade Battery tech does offer consistent real-world performance, MG manages to stay ahead in both range and power. That’s despite the MG4 riding on wider tires, which are generally less efficient.
Ground clearance is where things get interesting. The BYD Dolphin offers 175 mm, giving it a slight edge over the MG4’s 165 mm. With its suspension tuned on the stiffer side, the Dolphin handles rough roads with more confidence. The MG4 also features a firm setup, which helps it stay composed and planted, especially during spirited driving. However, that comes at the cost of some comfort on uneven surfaces.
So, if you’re looking for a fun-to-drive EV with sharper handling, the MG4 fits the bill. But if you value comfort, better interior quality, and overall everyday usability, the Dolphin is the more practical choice.
