MG4 Urban Coming to Nepal in 2026: When a Mohawk Cut Grows Up

HIGHLIGHTS

  • MG4 Urban price in Nepal will sit in the range of Rs. 40 to Rs. 50 Lakhs.
  • It features a front-wheel drive setup, unlike the rear-wheel drive predecessor.
  • The MG4 is likely to be powered by a 99kW motor and supported by a 42.8 kWh LFP battery.

Much like growing out of a rowdy phase into something more settled, the MG4 Urban marks a clear shift from sportiness to maturity. MG seems confident about this calmer direction for its home market in China, but the change might invite mixed reactions. In markets like Nepal, where the MG4’s sharper and more engaging character mattered, this grown-up makeover could potentially soften its appeal. But we will see about it soon enough as the MG4 Urban is rumored to launch in the first quarter of 2026.

Paramount Motors, one of the more consistent automotive distributors in 2025, is planning to bring the new MG4 to Nepal. This move feels less like an expansion and more like a necessary reset. The outgoing MG4 no longer enjoys the same traction it once did in Nepal’s rapidly evolving EV market. A wave of newer new-energy vehicles has crowded the space, each aggressively targeting value, features, and pricing, and the original MG4 has struggled to stay relevant in that fight. MG appears to have recognized this shift early and is responding with a fresh approach through a revamped version of a proven product.

That brings us to the MG4 Urban. The name is fairly self-explanatory. It takes the MG4 formula and reshapes it for city-focused use, with affordability sitting at the core of its positioning. In China, the MG4 Urban starts at <$10,000, undercutting the previous MG4 by a noticeable margin. That pricing alone signals its intent. MG is clearly aiming to plug the growing gap for value-driven compact EVs, even if that means trimming ambitions in favor of practicality and cost discipline.

Delays remain a real possibility. Paramount Motors is still negotiating with MG, and the ongoing currency volatility adds another layer of uncertainty.

Much will hinge on stock availability, regulatory approvals, and how the broader market shapes up over the next few months. Taking a more conservative view, the timeline could easily slip further, with July emerging as a more realistic window rather than an exception.

Moreover, there is no clarity about the incoming variants of the MG4 Urban. So, let’s take a look at the key specs of the MG4 Urban (top-variant) for Nepal 2026.

MG4 Urban Overview

Exterior

MG frames the MG4 Urban around SAIC’s Emotional Design Aesthetics, blending the brand’s British roots with a modern, zero-emission identity. If you are familiar with the outgoing MG4, this new look takes a moment to settle in. Both are hatchbacks, but the Urban trades the older car’s air-cutting, sporty stance for a more upright and practical shape. That shift likely increases drag slightly, and you can see where form has yielded to function.

Up front, the Urban looks completely different. The LED headlights drop the sharp, predatory expression and lean toward a calmer design, similar to what we have seen on the IM6. The bonnet sits less aggressively, and MG adds more visible grille area. The lower intake grows larger, mainly to channel air for battery cooling, while the scooped sections on either side stay largely familiar.

The side profile also changes noticeably. MG has raised the C-pillar, clearly separating the Urban from the older MG4’s sleeker silhouette. The wheels abandon the dramatic spoke pattern for a cleaner petal-style design. MG also relocates the charging port to the front-left fender, which feels more intuitive for daily use.

At the rear, MG shifts the focus from flair to usability. The full-width taillight bar mirrors the design seen on the MG Cyberster, and the arrow-style indicators make a confident visual statement. The rear window grows larger, the tailgate looks more pronounced, and boot space increases significantly.

MG adds more than 100 liters when you include the 98-liter underfloor storage, made possible by the switch to front-wheel drive. This decision clearly shows where MG aimed its priorities toward practicality and everyday usefulness.

The Urban still looks good, but the older MG4 carried a certain iconic edge that turned heads more easily. The new design fixes several practical drawbacks, even if it loses some visual excitement along the way. Then again, the “Urban” badge says it all. This version focuses on city life, and judged on that promise, the design feels justified.

Finally, there are seven different exterior color options: Purple, Green, Red, Blue, Hai, and White.

Interior

The MG4 Urban makes a stronger case inside. MG does not chase luxury here, but the cabin feels more fashion-forward and thoughtfully arranged than before. The steering wheel and the 7-inch instrument cluster carry over from the previous MG4, and the overall layout remains familiar. To be fair, many Chinese EVs follow this template, so originality only goes so far.

The changes matter more. MG introduces brighter dual-tone interior colors that lift the cabin instantly. Hard plastics still dominate, just like before, but this remains a budget-focused model in China, priced well below the earlier MG4. MG improves the balance slightly, and the materials rarely feel offensive in daily use.

The center console now forms a proper bridge to the dashboard instead of the old open tray design. This adds usable storage and cleans up the layout. MG neatly integrates the air vents and places physical buttons for the HVAC controls and hazard lights where your hands expect them.

A stitched dashboard panel houses the infotainment screen. Base variants use a 10.25-inch display similar to the older MG4, but Nepal will likely receive higher trims with the larger 12.8-inch unit. MG claims smoother processing and better responsiveness, which feels necessary since the previous system struggled to impress.

MG fits the seats with what it proudly calls baby-grade, skin-friendly leather, a phrase that sounds more amusing than reassuring. Higher trims add electric adjustment for both front seats, which is a welcome upgrade in this segment.

The 50 mm wheelbase increase translates into a small gain in rear legroom. Headroom, however, stays nearly unchanged despite the taller C-pillar, which feels like a missed opportunity. Still, the cabin covers the basics well, offering wireless charging, a sunroof, multiple charging ports, six speakers, ambient lighting, and automatic climate control with rear AC vents.

Performance

The MG4 is originally powered by a 120 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor. But it will sadly be detuned to 99 kW as MG Nepal usually does. The 99 kW unit is capable of producing 135 PS of max power and 250 Nm (same as the MG4) and these numbers do suit its urban focus.

An interesting bit lies in the battery talks. Well the one we are expected for Nepal is the 42.8 kWh LFP battery pack that supports a CLTC based range of 437 km. CLTC is very generous, impractical, and can’t be taken as real measure for estimating real world range. So, a nearabout WLTP figure can be safely assumed to be 350 kms. Furthermore, the battery pack can be charged from 0 to 100% in around 7 hours with a 7 kW AC charger.

And, the Urban also supports a DC Charging ~70 kW which can charge it from 30% to 80% in around 20 minutes.

What really stood out was the rumor of semi-solid-state batteries on some MG4 Urban variants. If that sounds unfamiliar, think of semi-solid batteries as a step above today’s conventional EV packs. They use a gel-like electrolyte instead of the fully liquid one found in LFP or NMC lithium-ion batteries, which is where the “semi-solid” name comes from.

On paper, this setup promises better safety, improved thermal stability, and potentially higher energy density. That all sounds exciting, but the MG4 Urban expected to arrive in Nepal will not come with this technology.

Another thing the MG4 Urban won’t feature is a rear wheel drive setup. MG4 which was known for its performance nature with a rear mounted motor and rear wheel drive. Instead, the Urban will feature a front-wheel drive setup which MG has reckoned to be a more suitable drive setup for a family-focused affordable option. A little let down!

The efficiency and safety part seems to be the major focus point for the Urban. Its Cell-to-Chassis technology turns the battery into a structural element, improving rigidity and lowering the center of gravity for better stability and efficiency. The design reduces weight and wasted space, though it can complicate repairs after major impacts.

With design choices like this, no wonder that the MG4 Urban got a 5-star rating on the Euro NCAP safety assessment.

Additional Details

McPherson Strut and Variable Cross-Section Torsion Beam handles the suspension duties.

The dimensions are 4395 mm in length, 1842 mm in width, and 1551 mm in height and the wheelbase is 2750 mm.

The ground clearance for the MG4 Urban is 160 mm initially and that’s unladen. MG Nepal has confirmed that they are working to increase the ground clearance for the Urban so that it meets Nepal’s road conditions.

One thing that the front wheel drive setup has allowed in the MG4 Urban is a substantial increment in boot space capacity. The 471 liters capacity is quite a lot for a vehicle in this segment and it is further expandable up to 1362 liters.

Rivals

The MG4 Urban seems to be clearly aiming at the BYD Dolphin in the family-focused hatchback segment, and on paper, it looks like a strong contender. Take the specs for example: the Urban packs a 99 kW motor compared to the Dolphin’s 70 kW, giving it a noticeable edge in power. While WLTP range figures for the Urban haven’t been officially confirmed, a rough comparison of the Dolphin’s 420 km CLTC against the Urban’s 437 km suggests the Urban might pull slightly ahead. Its lighter kerb weight only adds to the advantage.

When it comes to technology, the two cars are well matched. Both ride on dedicated electric platforms. You could argue that BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 is more refined than MG’s Modular Scalable Platform, but the difference will be largely invisible to everyday drivers. Both cars use CTB technology, which boosts efficiency and safety, and both have earned five-star ratings in Euro NCAP crash tests while also delivering acceptable ADAS functionality.

Where the Urban really shines is practicality. Its boot space is larger than the Dolphin’s, giving families more room for groceries, luggage, or weekend gear. Cabin space is generous in both cars, but the Urban clearly wins in storage flexibility.

The big question mark remains the Urban’s price. The Dolphin already comes in at a competitive Rs. 41.15 Lakhs, and MG will need to strike a balance between premium features and affordability to make a convincing case. Market saturation is another factor. While young families will likely appreciate the Urban, the Dolphin has already captured a significant chunk of this segment. MG Nepal may have studied the market carefully, but the competition is stiff, and the Urban will need more than specs to stand out.
