Govt. Imposes Rs. 10,000 Tax on iPhones and Phones Above 1 Lakh Brought from Abroad

  • Mobile phones imported from abroad and priced above 1 lakh will be subject to a 10,000 rupees tax.

A tax of Rs. 10,000 will be levied on iPhones and mobile phones costing above Rs. 1,00,000 brought from abroad to Nepal. Additionally, the government has imposed a tax of Rs. 3,000 on other smartphones and 200 rupees on non-smartphone mobile phones.

Users of mobile phones that were in use until May 29th, 2023, but are not registered in the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) implemented by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), will need to pay a lump-sum fee for the tax while mentioning the IMEI number of the phone.

As per the Aarthik Vidhayak 2080 (आर्थिक विधेयक २०८०), a tax of ten thousand rupees will be charged per iPhone and phone costing more than one lakh, while a tax of three thousand rupees will be imposed on other smartphones, and two hundred rupees on ordinary mobile phones other than smartphones.

No Tax for Nepali Migrant Workers

However, if a citizen returns from foreign employment with a labor permit that exceeds six months and provides proof of it, they will be eligible to have one mobile phone registered by the Telecommunication Authority free of charge for their personal use.

Additionally, the government has implemented a one percent service charge on migrant workers. According to the Aarthik Vidhayak, individuals licensed to operate foreign employment businesses are required to submit a foreign employment service fee equivalent to one percent of the amount collected from individuals pursuing foreign employment.

It is mentioned in the Aarthik Vidhayak that the amount will be utilized for the benefit of individuals pursuing foreign employment. The foreign employment professional is responsible for depositing the service fee into the revenue account by the 25th of each month, and the corresponding details should be submitted to the relevant revenue office. The Aarthik Vidhayak specifies that failure to file the fee will result in the imposition of a 15 percent interest rate.
