We first covered the Smart #3 and Smart #1 back in mid-2024, when CG Motors, the official distributor of Smart Automobile in Nepal, confirmed that it would arrive soon. Bookings even opened for the Smart lineup at the time. However, uncertain launch timelines, followed by disruptions such as the CG showroom fire during the Gen Z protest, pushed those plans into limbo. Fast forward to today, and the Smart series has officially launched in Nepal.

So, what’s the story behind the name, and why does Smart carry a premium price tag?

The name “Smart” has an interesting origin. It comes from the combination of Swatch, Mercedes-Benz, and Art. Swatch, the Swiss watch brand, originally envisioned the concept. Mercedes-Benz later stepped in to turn that idea into a production-ready car, while “Art” represented the brand’s design-focused approach. Together, Swatch + Mercedes-Benz + Art formed what we now know as Smart.

As for the “#” naming, it reflects the brand’s modern, digital-first identity. The hashtag symbolizes connectivity, tech-forward thinking, and a break from traditional automotive naming conventions. Moreover, as the number after the hashtag increases, the cars are supposed to become more capable, bigger, and exciting.

And while this isn’t to stereotype, having Swiss roots and Mercedes-Benz design influence does help explain, at least partially, why Smart positions itself as a premium offering.

On the corporate side, Smart Automobile now operates as a 50:50 joint venture between Mercedes-Benz AG and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. Mercedes-Benz handles the design and overall aesthetic direction, while Geely takes care of manufacturing in China and the EV-specific engineering. In simple terms, Smart blends Mercedes-Benz’s design DNA with Geely’s electric vehicle expertise, and that combination plays a big role in defining both the character and pricing of the car.

But the real difference lies between the Pro+ and the Premium. The top-spec Premium uses a more efficiency-focused powertrain and adds several comfort and feature upgrades inside the cabin. It also brings automatic and adaptive high beam functionality as part of its expanded ADAS package, which the Pro+ misses out on.

Let’s get familiar with the key specifications of the Smart #3 in Nepal for 2026.

Smart #3 Overview

Exterior

The Smart #3 is an all-electric SUV coupe designed by Mercedes-Benz, and it carries a sportier interpretation of the brand’s Sensual Purity design philosophy. This philosophy forms the backbone of Mercedes-Benz’s global design language, and it shows clearly in the #3’s flowing surfaces and clean proportions. If the Smart #1 and #3 look similar at first glance, that is no coincidence. Both models share the same design direction. However, the #3 comes across as the more visually appealing of the two, largely because of its coupe-style silhouette.

At the front, the Smart #3 keeps a compact and rounded profile. Instead of relying on sharp creases or busy detailing, the design leans heavily on smooth curves to create character. The lighting setup easily becomes the highlight here.

A slim LED light bar stretches across the front and seamlessly connects the headlamp units, wrapping around the lamps in a clean and modern layout. Visually, it looks elegant and distinctive. Much of the remaining front design mirrors the Smart #1, including the short bonnet, the lower air intake, and the angular air scoops positioned at the corners.

Where the Smart #3 truly sets itself apart is in the side profile. The sloping roofline over the C-pillar immediately gives away its coupe identity. From this angle, the car looks lower, sleeker, and more dynamic than the #1. However, this design choice does come with a compromise. With an unladen ground clearance of just 170 mm, the #3 may struggle on some of Nepal’s rougher roads and uneven speed breakers.

On the positive side, the coupe shape significantly improves aerodynamics. With a drag coefficient of 0.27, the Smart #3 stands out as a quite efficient design for its segment.

Like the Smart #1, the #3 rides on 19-inch alloy wheels, but the suspension setup sits noticeably lower. This lower stance, combined with the wide wheels and coupe roofline, reinforces the idea that the #3 prioritizes sporty driving and performance over outright practicality.

At the rear, the design carries a strong Mercedes influence. The full-width taillight bar mirrors the front lighting layout and gives the car a premium, familiar look. From this angle, the Smart #3 also appears wider than the #1, which adds to its road presence and gives it a more planted, SUV-like stance despite its coupe proportions.

Interior

Both Smart series cars follow the same architecture but unlike the #1, the #3 has more legroom for second row passengers and more cargo space in the boot, thanks to its 35 mm longer wheelbase. The science of space optimization has been properly understood by the design engineers, so the cabin is pretty airy and flat-floored.

But between the two variants of the #3, there are some quality and equipment differences. For starters, the Pro+ seats come wrapped in an imitation leather kind of thingy, while the Premium uses genuine leather, as per the brochure. While both variants have electrical adjustment for the front seats, only the Premium variant has the ventilation and driver seat memory functions.

Moving on, the cockpit is deficient in physical touch buttons and relies on the 12.8-inch infotainment screen placed centrally over the center console. One thing that differentiates the #3 fromthe  #1 on the interior side is the circular AC vents, whereas rectangular vents are seen on the #1. Nothing noteworthy, only stating.

The three-spoke steering wheel sits behind a 9.2-inch Instrument Cluster, and opting for the Premium variant can get you a 10-inch Head-Up Display on your line of sight without having to look down at the cluster screen. Another thing that distinguishes the Premium variant is the audio quality coming from the 13-speaker Beats sound system, whereas the Pro+ comes with a standard 5-speaker setup.

Performance

All of the variants of the Smart #3 are powered by a 200 kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), which generates a max power of 272 PS and a max torque of 343 Nm. Like the #1, the #3 also resides on the heavier side, 1788-1810 kg, depending on the variant.

Also, much like the #1, the combination of the powerful 200 kW motor and rear wheel drive makes it pretty exciting to drive, despite the heavier kerb weight. Furthermore, #3, beyond #1, has superior aerodynamics due to its coupe body. All of this allows the #3 to do a 0-100 kmph sprint in 5.8 seconds while the top speed remains capped at 180 kmph.

Both variants of the #3 are supported by 66 kWh NMC battery pack but while the Pro+ manages a WLTP range of 435 km, the Premium variant (despite being 22 kgs heavier) has a WLTP-certified range of 435 Km range (WLTP). And the reason behind this looks to be the powertrain, which is more efficient on the Premium variant, in terms of energy consumption per km.

About charging, both variants can fully charge in around 10 hours with a 7.2 kW AC charger, but the Premium variant is offered with a 22 kW AC charger as standard, which brings the time down to 3.5 hours. Moreover, since the #3 is built on a 400V platform, both variants are able to charge from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes with a 150 kW DC Charger.

In addition to these variants, there is also a “Brabus” model, which is focused on performance. It features all-wheel drive and a total motor output of 315 kW. But sadly, it won’t be coming to Nepal anytime soon. For reference, this version can reach a top speed of 180 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds.

Additional Features

Front McPherson and Rear Multi-link handle the suspension duties. While it is the same setup as the one in #1, the #3’s suspension sits a bit lower and is more sport-oriented than the #1’s cushy tuning.

The dimensions are 4400 mm in length, 1844 mm in width, 1566 mm in height, and the wheelbase is 2785 mm. The 35 mm elongated wheelbase on the #3 tries to address a shortcoming of the #1 regarding the boot space, which is 370 liters on the #3 (323 liters on #1,) but it is still small compared to what other vehicles of this dimensions and wheelbase can offer.

Also, the ground clearance is 170 mm at unladen conditions, thanks to its coupe body. This is going to raise a lot of eyebrows as this number represents the condition when no one is sitting inside the car, nor any cargo is loaded. When the vehicle is loaded properly, the ground clearance can take a significant dip. While the stiffer suspension might deter the car from doing that, the effect should be taken into account.

Both the Smart #1 and Smart #3 have been launched, so you can visit the CG Motors showroom for intended bookings or additional information.

The following table lists the Smart #3 price in Nepal for 2026.

Smart #3 Price in Nepal
Pro+ 99,99,000
Premium 1,14,99,000
Premium Matte 1,24,99,000

Rivals

Like the Smart #1, pitting the Smart #3 against any EV is quite tricky due to segment and price disparity. Usually, cars of the dimensions and posture like that of the #3 seldom belong to this category, and the Nepali market might not get on with Smart’s idea of “tech-front EV” or “German-Designed.”

While the 200 kW motor is something that will help it stand out from other EVs, which are normally capped at 99 kW for Nepal, the rest of the setup, equipment, and practicality can be easily found in any arbitrary EV (if not more), at approx. half of its price.

So we will take some time to assess how the Smart brand does in Nepal, as it has just opened its shop officially. Come back for a concrete verdict after some time.
