Samsung Galaxy M16 5G Overview
Design
The Samsung Galaxy M16 features a polycarbonate (plastic) body, just like its predecessor, the Galaxy M15. However, unlike the predecessor, the M16 has a completely flat back panel with a polished plastic finish that resembles glass.
These design changes give the phone a premium look, and at first glance, it closely resembles Samsung’s higher-end A-series models.
The second major design upgrade is the camera layout. The M16 now features a linear camera module, similar to changes we saw on the recently launched A36 and A56. Among the three cameras, two are grouped together, while the third stands alone.
On the sides, you’ll find the volume rocker and power button, which doubles as a fingerprint sensor. At the bottom, there’s a USB Type-C port and a speaker.
This time, the M16 lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you’ll need to use either wireless headphones or a USB Type-C audio solution.
Display
The Samsung Galaxy M16 features a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display—slightly larger than last year, but with the same 1080 x 2340 resolution. As a result, the M16 has a lower pixel density, which may make images appear less sharp.
Interestingly, Samsung seems to be moving in the opposite direction with pixel density: 400 ppi on the M14, 396 ppi on the M15, and 385 ppi on the M16.
The 90Hz refresh rate and 800-nit brightness remain unchanged from last year’s model. As a result, you might struggle to see the screen clearly in direct sunlight or brightly lit environments.
On the bright side, the side bezels are noticeably thinner compared to last year. Though the chin is still relatively thick, and the waterdrop notch also remains, I guess that’s expected in this budget.
Hardware
Powering the Galaxy M16 is the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset, the same one used in the Galaxy A16. It features 2x 2.4 GHz Cortex-A76 high-performance cores and 6x 2.0 GHz Cortex-A55 efficient cores. Handling graphics is the Mali-G57 MC2 GPU.
The Galaxy M16 and A16 share the same processor and specs, so their performance is expected to be similar. Given the A16’s popularity, the M16 is also anticipated to perform well in the market.
Globally, the phone offers configurations with 4GB, 6GB, or 8GB of RAM paired with 128GB or 256GB of storage. However, only the 6 GB+128 GB variant is available in Nepal. Storage is expandable via microSD card (up to a massive 1.5TB), ensuring ample space for apps, media, and files.
Camera
The Samsung Galaxy M16 comes with a triple camera setup on the rear, with the main camera being a 50MP lens. Accompanying the main camera is a 5MP ultrawide lens, and lastly, there’s a 2MP macro lens.
For selfies, the device is equipped with a 13MP front-facing camera. Both front and rear camera systems support 1080p video recording at 30fps.
Judging by the camera specifications alone, the Galaxy M16’s camera system shows no hardware improvements over last year’s model. Therefore, we can expect similar photo quality, which wasn’t particularly bad.
However, the M15’s ultrawide lens struggled with detail retention, and this limitation will likely carry over to the M16 as well. Other than that, we can expect better image quality overall.
Battery and OS
The Galaxy M16 comes with a 5,000mAh battery, a noticeable downgrade from the 6,000mAh battery featured in the M15 and M14. This change was likely made to achieve a slimmer design.
Other than that, the battery supports 25W fast charging. Unfortunately, the phone does not come with a charger included in the packaging. However, in the Nepali market, Samsung always bundles a 25W charger for phones in the budget segment, and this year is no exception.
The device comes with Android 15 out of the box with One UI 7 skin. Furthermore, the Samsung Galaxy M16 will receive up to six iterations of Android OS and security updates, which seems to be the key highlight on Samsung’s M and A-series phones this year.
The Samsung Galaxy M16 also comes with Samsung Knox Vault, a hardware-based tamper-resistant environment that holds sensitive data and physically isolates PINs, passwords, biometrics, and security-critical keys away from the rest and stores them in secure memory.
