Huawei Nova 5 Family – Things You Should Know!

It looks like the release of a new Nova device is going to be a bi annual event. Huawei released the Nova 4 in December 2018. 6 months later, Nova 5 has been announced. Though the Nova 4 looked near identical to the Nova 3, Nova 5 seems to be a significant improvement over Nova 4.

Nova 5 family is a family of 3 phones. There is the good old Nova 5. Then there’s a badass Nova 5 Pro. And then there’s a slight spec upgrade of the last year’s Nova 4 called the Nova 5i.Unlike the Nova 4, Nova 5 and 5 pro come with a traditional notch at the top of the display. It’s a teardrop notch but it seems a little dated compared to Nova 4’s punch hole design. Looks like many people prefer the notch over the punch hole. But the upside is that both these screens are FHD+ OLED panels.

Nova 5i comes with the same punch hole design. If you like that design, there’s still a phone for you from Huawei. You also have to be content with an LCD panel instead of the OLED on the other two phones.

Inside, Nova 5 Pro packs the mighty Kirin 980 processor. This is the same 7nm processor that powers the P30 pro and the Mate 20 pro. Nova 5 comes with a new Kirin 810 processor. This is the first mid-range processor from Huawei that is based on 7nm technology and the first mid-range processor to come with a dedicated NPU. This is a big deal for aspects like photography. Nova 5i comes with the same Kirin 710 processor that was in Nova 3i.

The uniting aspects of all these 3 phones are their quad-camera setups. Nova 5 pro and Nova 5 have the same 48MP (main) + 16MP(ultrawide) + 2MP (macro camera) + 2MP (depth sensor) setup. I hadn’t seen a dedicated macro lens in a smartphone camera until today. It will be interesting to see how this performs in real life. Nova 4i, on the other hand, has a quad camera setup of 24MP (main) + 8MP (ultrawide) + 2MP (macro camera) + 2MP (depth sensor).

At the front, both the Nova 5 and 5 pro have a 32MP camera while the 5i has a 24MP one.

One common cool feature of the Nova 5 and Nova 5 Pro is the super fast 40W charging. According to Huawei, this charger can charge these phones with 3500mAh battery up to 85% from 0 in 30 minutes. If the claims are true, these will probably be the fastest charging phones in the smartphone land.

Naturally, Nova 5i doesn’t have that fast charging capability. It only supports 10W charging speeds.

Huawei also announced the pricing of these devices. Nova 5 pro starts at $436, Nova 5 starts at $407, and Nova 5i starts at $291. These are the prices of these phones in China. They will obviously change when they arrive in Nepal. But these are some prices to beat. Nova 5 pro looks like a direct competitor to the Redmi K20 pro.
