Huawei’s First Desktop PC, the MateStation, Makes it Way to Nepal

Huawei launched the Huawei MateStation S in Nepal during the company’s annual event Huawei Connect 2021 in November. It’s Huawei’s first desktop PC to be released in the country.

Huawei MateStation S Overview

Design and Ports

The Huawei MateStation S comes in a very compact body, measuring only 293 x 93 x 315.5 mm. The front has a diagonal pattern design, which Huawei calls the “star trail” design.

The front side has a power button on the top right corner and three ports, an audio jack, a USB-C (USB 2.0), and a USB-A (USB 3.2 Gen 2), vertically aligned beneath the button.

Furthermore, on the backside of the desktop, it has a mic-in port, a line-out port, a line-in port, an HDMI port, a VGA port, 4 x USB-A (2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 and 2 x USB 2.0), an RJ45 port, and a Serial port.

Hardware

The desktop comes equipped with an AMD Ryzen 5 4600G APU processor. It’s a desktop CPU but exclusively for OEMs.

The processor has 6 cores and 12 threads and has integrated AMD Radeon Graphics. It is based on AMD’s Zen 2 architecture, which is fabricated on a 7nm FinFet node from TSMC.

The desktop comes with 8GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM and a 256GB M.2 NVMe SSD. There are two RAM slots and two M.2 slots on the motherboard. Both the RAM and the M.2 SSD can be upgraded.

However, the RAM slots provided in this desktop are SO-DIMM slots—which are commonly found in laptops—rather than DIMM slots, which is unusual for a desktop.

The motherboard also has a SATA port, so the user can connect a SATA hard drive or SSD, but the desktop has no dedicated place to mount the drive.

The desktop also has a PCIe x16 slot that, technically, supports a graphics card, but since the desktop case is so small and the PSU is only rated at 300W, it’s difficult to fit a powerful GPU in the case and supply enough power.

Features and Connectivity

Additionally, the Huawei MateStation S comes with a Huawei Share. It lets Huawei phones easily connect to the computer and do many things, such as easy file transfer, opening mobile apps on the computer, and many more.

For connectivity, the desktop comes with Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0.

The Huawei MateStation S is a pre-built desktop PC that lacks a lot of desktop features. It has SO-DIMM RAM slots instead of DIMMs, a PCIe slot for a graphics card but cannot use it due to size and power limitations, and a SATA port but no dedicated drive mounting place.

As for the performance goes, it has a capable APU that can handle basic tasks easily and even some light gaming and photo/video editing. In conclusion, this desktop is targeted towards light users who do not need upgradeability.
