Honor X6d 5G Launched in Nepal: Chipset is Better, But Everything Else?

Honor Nepal has launched a new batch of products, including two new earbuds, Honor X5d series, and Honor X6d 5G. In this article, we will focus on the latter smartphone, which left me genuinely confused by some of the choices Honor has made with it.

But before that, let’s take a look at the phone’s pricing.

The worldwide memory shortage has turned the idea of a valuable phone into a myth. But even before that, the Honor X6c was already a poor value proposition.

Honor clearly made some tough calls with the X6d to keep prices in check. With that in mind, could the Honor X6d 5G still achieve what its predecessor could not — offering a good value for money?

I actually think it does. But for this, what sorcery did Honor have to pull off? Let’s discuss.

Honor X6d 5G Overview

Let’s start with the chipset first, because that’s the biggest upgrade this phone has received. The Honor X6d comes with MediaTek Dimensity 6300, making it worthy of the “5G” tag in its name.

The D6300 may be one of the weaker 5G chips on the market, but it is still a significant step up from the Helio G81 that powered the X6c. So, the performance is one area where the Honor X6d should comfortably outdo its predecessor.

As for variants, the X6d is only available in a single 4/128GB option. The X6c previously came in two variants with 6GB of base memory, so we are starting with less RAM and fewer options this time around. Expected, given the current situation. On the bright side, storage can be expanded externally by up to 1TB.

On to the display, we are still getting a TFT LCD panel. It has grown slightly larger at 6.75 inches (vs 6.61 inches), while the resolution remains practically the same. The refresh rate, however, has dipped from 120Hz down to 90Hz. The display now features a waterdrop notch, which is a step backwards from the hole-punch cutout on the X6c.

Design-wise, I think the Honor X6d 5G looks better than its predecessor, with an OPPO Find X9-esque aesthetic. That said, the phone has dropped both the SGS certification and the IP rating that the X6c previously flaunted.

This is likely one of the ways Honor has cut costs, given these labels charge smartphone brands fees for these certifications. While the X6d is likely on a similar level of durability to its predecessor, the lack of a proper certification isn’t exactly good for that “peace of mind”.

The cameras, however, appear to be untouched, as the Honor X6d has a 50MP shooter on the back paired with a secondary 0.08MP QVGA snapper, which is there just for the vibes. Likewise, the phone has a 5MP camera on the front for selfies and face scanning.

The resolution of these cameras is unchanged on the spec sheet, but the sensor underneath could be different. However, we cannot tell for sure as the brand has not shared any information on the sensors they have used.

Battery capacity has also taken a slight hit, dropping to 5,260mAh, a measly 40mAh less than last generation. That difference will not be noticeable in day-to-day usage. It is still a little odd to see Honor of all brands, cut down on battery capacity, given their history of consistently offering some of the largest batteries in the Nepali market. Tough times, I guess.

While you may not notice any difference in the phone’s overall battery life, you will definitely notice the sluggish 15W charging speed. After all, the X6c was over twice as fast at 35W!

The Honor X6d 5G is a phone that has clearly cut corners. But Honor was strategic about where those cuts were made. By choosing the MediaTek Dimensity 6300, they have kept the one spec that matters most in this segment, i.e. performance.

The only other phone in this price range currently offering a 5G chip is the HTC Wildfire E7 Elite, which is the stronger overall package. But every other phone in this price point only got here because the memory crisis inflated their original sub-Rs 20,000 price tags.

So yes, Honor cut corners, but they cut the right ones. As a result, the Honor X6d 5G ends up being a much better pick than the X6c ever was.
