VG Impex, the authorized distributor of GWM vehicles in Nepal, is preparing to expand the ORA lineup with the introduction of the ORA 5. This new model is larger and technically more capable than its sibling, but the question remains whether it can make a real impact in Nepal’s competitive EV market.

The ORA 03, the smaller and earlier sibling, struggled to gain traction here. Several factors contributed to its limited success, but the most obvious was its inability to compete with the segment’s established leaders. As a result, GWM had to reduce the original price from 47.5 Lakhs to 40 Lakhs to clear the stock.

Whether the ORA 5 will face a similar challenge is yet to be seen. Pricing will play a critical role, but there is a broader issue with ORA and GWM in Nepal that we will explore carefully as we move further into this article.

Nepal’s EV market already offers plenty of compact electric cars. In fact, the segment has become so crowded that many buyers struggle to decide which model to choose. Several established EV brands have already secured a strong presence in this category, making the competition even tougher.

In such a saturated market, the big question remains: what exactly does the ORA 5 bring to the table to stand out? Let’s start with the the key specs of GWM ORA 5 in Nepal for 2026.

GWM ORA 5 Overview

Exterior

The GWM ORA 5 follows a philosophy of “circles and curves” which replaces the sharp, and industrial severity found in typical modern EVs. The design of ORA 5 is meant to be such that every panel flows like liquid metal or waterfall into one, another and throughout. It retains the playful “Cat Family” DNA with a wide-eyed, rounded contours, and a non-aggressive stance, like the ORA 03.

The front face is recognizable from the predecessor and is dominated by the circular headlights with adaptive functionality for high/low beam. But unlike the ORA 03, the ORA 5 is more muscular and buff right from the start. Below sits a sculpted bumper with a trapezoidal ventilation openings. And, staying true to its design philosophy, the front is in no way aggressive or sharp; it is a very approachable design indeed.

From the side, the proportions become evident and that “compact hatchback” silhouette comes to life. The wheelbase is 2720 mm which makes the ORA 5 70 mm longer than the ORA 03, and propels it into its intended category.

It stands on 18-inch Alloy wheels fitted into compact wheel arches. One thing that bothers me is its ground clearance. Since GWM intended it to be a city car, the ground clearance is inherently low. For it to work in Nepal, the ground clearance has to raised to some extent.

The rear completes the “waterfall-like” philosophy with a clamshell-style tailgate which also integrates a concealed full-width horizontal taillight bar, just below the ear window.

There are six color options for exterior: Aurora Green, Senna Grey, Lake Sayram Blue, Cliff White, Sand Dune Beige, and Linzhi Red.

Interior

On the interior side, the cabin is said to have been inspired by Eastern traditional Chinese painting which brings generous negative space, soft textures, and subtle craft into the conversation. But having said that, this interior is nothing different from what we are not habituated to. The layout is somewhat similar to the ORA 03 but there’s some calmness factor about the ORA 5.

Moving on to specifics, there is a 15.6-inch large central touchscreen and most functions would have to be carried out from this as the interior is deprived of physical buttons. Reportedly, there’s also generative AI integration on the infotainment powered by DeepSeek.

Seats are made of imitation leather and allows electric adjustment for the front two seats and also feature heating and ventilation.

The steering wheel is a simple single-spoke in the ORA 5, as compared to the 03 which had a lot of physical buttons on it. Sitting behind this steering wheel is a 10.25-inch instrument cluster. So, the information perceiving department is pretty solid and familiar.

A highlight is its pet-friendly features like waterproof rear seat and large footwells.  Other amenities include wireless charging, USB ports, panoramic sunroof, dashcam, 6-speaker audio system, automatic climate control, among others.

The interior is available in three palettes: Dawn White, Noon/Midday Brown, and Starry/Midnight Grey.

Performance

The GWM ORA 5 runs on a 99 kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor that delivers 135 PS of power and 260 Nm of torque. While these figures look respectable on paper, they place the ORA 5 comfortably in the middle of the compact EV segment rather than at the top.

The motor draws energy from a 58.3 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery pack, supplied by SVOLT Energy Technology, a battery manufacturing subsidiary of Great Wall Motor. According to the official figures, the battery supports a CLTC-claimed driving range of 580 km. In more realistic terms, this translates to roughly 450 to 470 km on the WLTP cycle, which gives a clearer idea of what drivers can expect in everyday conditions.

For charging, the ORA 5 supports a 6.6 kW AC charger, which can replenish the battery from empty to full in about 10.5 hours. The specification sheet also states that the battery can charge from 30 percent to 80 percent in around 20 minutes on a DC fast charger. Based on this charging window and battery capacity, the system likely supports around 100 kW of DC fast charging.

Underneath, the ORA 5 sits on GWM iDE-A Platform, a dedicated electric platform developed by Great Wall Motor. While this architecture should help with efficiency, packaging, and driving refinement, the overall powertrain specifications still feel fairly conventional.

In the context of Nepal’s rapidly evolving EV market, even the compact segment now features models with stronger performance figures, faster charging speeds, or more distinctive technology packages. Because of that, the ORA 5’s powertrain does not immediately stand out. It should deliver a competent and efficient driving experience, but on paper alone, these specifications may not create the most compelling sales pitch for buyers who increasingly expect more from modern electric vehicles.

Additional Details

McPherson Strut and Multi-Link setup handles the suspension duties.

The dimensions are 4471 mm in length, 1833 mm in width, 1641 mm in height, and 2720 mm of wheelbase. However, the ground clearance is not available as it is in trend to increase the ground clearance to better match the road conditions of Nepal.

For storage, there is a 333 liters of boot space which can be expanded with rear seats folded. But more interestingly, ORA 5 is said to have a total of 33 interior storage compartments including the glovebox and that will be quite handy.

GWM ORA 5 Price in Nepal and Availability

Talking about the price, GWM ORA 5 is expected to be between Rs. 55,00,000 to Rs. 60,00,000. The official pricing is not out yet but this price range is probable considering the need for an aggressive demand for the ORA 5 to compete in this segment.

It will probably be launched in a single variant among the four different options available originally. And, the launch is rumored to be at the end of this month, i.e., March 2026, so do come back to this article for updates.

Rivals

Now let’s come to the most decisive part: the competition that the GWM ORA 5 will face in Nepal. And to be honest, the competition is quite cut-throat. The segment already includes strong contenders like the BYD Atto 2, BYD Atto 3, MG S5 EV, Deepal S05, Leapmotor B10, and even the value-focused Dongfeng Nammi Vigo.

On paper, the ORA 5 looks like a capable electric vehicle. If you compare the specifications alone, the differences between it and its rivals appear livable or even fairly minor. The ORA 5 packs a 99 kW motor, offers a usable range of over 450 km, and includes a decent set of features. From a pure spec-sheet perspective, it holds its ground.

However, the real challenge lies elsewhere. Earlier I mentioned the issue that Great Wall Motors and the ORA lineup have faced in Nepal, and that issue becomes more visible in this comparison. When you look at the rivals, a clear pattern appears. Most of these competitors already built a strong foundation in the Nepali market through their earlier models. Their predecessors gained traction and created trust among buyers. That momentum naturally carries forward to their newer models. The ORA 03, which came before the ORA 5, unfortunately could not achieve that level of success in Nepal. Because of that, the ORA 5 enters the market without the same level of brand momentum.

Each rival also brings a unique selling point that resonates strongly with buyers here. BYD enjoys immense brand credibility in the EV space, so the name itself carries weight. MG Motor continues to launch new models at a rapid pace while heavily investing in research and development, which strengthens its reputation in the market.

Deepal puts strong emphasis on battery technology and advanced features, positioning its vehicles as technology-driven products. Leapmotor, one of China’s fastest-growing EV startups, has built a reputation for energy-efficient vehicles that offer generous features at a relatively accessible price. Meanwhile, the Dongfeng Nammi Vigo stands out as one of the best value-for-money EVs currently available in the market.

In comparison, the ORA 5 does not immediately present a defining advantage. The GWM name carries significant weight in China, but it still lacks the same market presence and recognition in Nepal when compared to the brands mentioned above. Because of that, GWM Nepal may need to invest more effort in repositioning the brand and strengthening its marketing strategy.

To its credit, the ORA 5 does have an appealing design. A certain group of buyers will appreciate its styling, just as some did with the ORA 03. However, Nepali EV buyers have now developed a clear preference for aggressive pricing, major battery technology breakthroughs, and strong after-sales commitments. In such a competitive environment, selling the ORA 5 may require an exceptionally persuasive sales approach.

What do you think about the GWM ORA 5? Will it suffer the same fate like its sibling or grow to become something else? Let us know in the comments.
