Dayun entered Nepal in mid-2024 but failed to make much of an impact, as its EVs offered little to get excited about. Now, a year and a half later, the parent brand is facing financial issues while distributors in Nepal are pushing aggressive offers like a 4-lakh down payment on the Yuehu S1. So what is really going on?

CG Motors, the official distributor of Dayun vehicles in Nepal, now finds itself in a difficult position. Dayun’s New Energy Vehicle division has entered bankruptcy proceedings and is undergoing a major restructuring effort in an attempt to stabilize operations and return to normalcy.
To a certain extent, this outcome feels inevitable. China’s EV space is brutally competitive, crowded with countless brands fighting for survival, and not everyone makes it through. Still, the situation raises valid concerns. This is not the first time a CG-backed EV brand has run into serious trouble. Before Dayun, Neta faced severe financial distress and eventually shut down, which naturally puts CG Motors’ EV strategy under closer scrutiny.
For some background, Dayun Group is a Chinese vehicle manufacturing conglomerate that began as a small repair and motorcycle business. Over the years, it expanded into trucks and broader automotive manufacturing through acquisitions. When China introduced favorable policies and subsidies to accelerate EV adoption, Dayun entered the electric space under the Dayun New Energy banner. Like many late entrants, it struggled to build scale and differentiation in an already saturated market.
CG brought the Dayun Yuehu S1 to Nepal in fairly large numbers, largely because the market expected EV taxes to rise after the 2081/82 budget announcement. That increase never happened. While the tax structure stayed unchanged, hundreds of units ended up sitting idle at the Chobar Dry Port, leaving CG with inventory that has proven difficult to move.

The pricing looks undeniably attractive. But but but, price alone does not tell the full story. As discussed earlier, uncertainty around Dayun’s global financial stability raises serious concerns about long-term ownership. Discounts may help clear stock, but they do little to reassure buyers about long-term ownership.
In Nepal, CG is offering an 8-year or 150,000 km warranty on the motor and battery, along with a 5-year or 120,000 km warranty on the chassis. While that sounds generous, warranty commitments only matter if long-term parts availability, technical support, and manufacturer backing remain intact.
This brings us to the bigger question. How will CG ensure consistent after-sales support for the roughly 100 existing customers and any future buyers if Dayun’s global operations continue to weaken?
It is clear that CG wants to move inventory, and that is understandable from a business standpoint. But from a customer’s perspective, the risks outweigh the short-term savings. Despite the tempting price and offers, we would advise buyers to think carefully before committing.

Dayun Yuehu S1 Overview
Exterior
The Dayun Yuehu S1 is a compact electric mini crossover SUV built on a dedicated EV platform, and it clearly targets urban commuters. Its design leans toward a youthful, rounded, and minimal look, prioritizing affordability and day-to-day practicality over flair. The overall character feels friendly and inoffensive, though it also lacks any strong visual identity that might help it stand out.
Up front, the Yuehu S1 features a fully closed EV-style fascia with a smooth, body-colored finish. Subtle sculpting around the charging port and the hood adds some depth, while slim horizontal LED daytime running lights stretch across the upper section.

These DRLs integrate neatly with narrow projector headlights housed in angular geometric enclosures. The front end is actually quite likeable and arguably the most cohesive part of the design.
The side profile, however, feels plain and largely forgettable. That said, the cab-forward stance hints at a usable and airy cabin, which matters more in this segment than dramatic styling. One area where the Yuehu S1 genuinely scores points is ground clearance. Riding on 16-inch wheels with a visibly raised body, it offers over 200 mm of clearance. And, the Nepali market genuinely values this feature.
At the rear, the design stays clean and simple. A full-width LED taillight bar connects slim vertical light elements, while the DAYUN lettering sits prominently below the rear glass in a chrome finish.

The absence of a rear wiper feels like a cost-cutting decision and is hard to ignore. Boot loading height looks reasonable, and despite the car not being particularly tall, loading and unloading cargo should remain manageable for everyday use. But the boot space itself, at 255 liters, is compact, to say the least.
The exterior is available in three colors: White, Green, and Teal.
Interior
Interior of the Dayun Yuehu S1 follows a clean and straightforward design approach. It avoids flashy or overstyled elements, which feels acceptable given its pricing. The image shown here represents the left-hand-drive version, but the layout remains identical to the right-hand-drive model sold in Nepal.
The dashboard features a layered design with chrome trim strips running across its width, neatly framing the rectangular air vents. A flat-bottom, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with perforated sections and integrated controls adds a mild sporty touch to an otherwise functional cabin.

Cabin is not a key selling point, and visible cost-cutting is hard to ignore. The central touchscreen is limited to an 8-inch unit, climate control is basic with standard air conditioning, and the center console feels small and underdeveloped. The seats use imitation upholstery, and the front seats rely on manual adjustment, which may not sit well with younger buyers expecting more convenience features.
The Yuehu S1 comes with a five-seater layout, and both headroom and legroom are fairly decent for its size. While the interior lacks excitement, it feels adequately assembled and practical for daily urban commuting.
Performance
Now, coming to the performance part, it wouldn’t excite you in any way. The motor size is just 39 kW that generates a max power of 53 PS and a max torque of 125 Nm. The light kerb weight at 1100 kgs might boost its agile and maneuver credentials, but the powertrain fundamentals are kept just enough for urban driving and context.
More on the powertrain, the motor is powered from a 30.66 kWh Ternary Battery and supports a CLTC claimed figure of 300 km. If you don’t go much out of the urban jungle, have an average speed below 20 km/h on your daily drives, and usually travel solo without much cargo, then that driving range is achievable with some deviations. But based on the standardized scale, CLTC-based range claims are pretty inflated and might expect deviations up to 35%. Do ask for a proven range record at the showroom.

For charging, the Yuehu S1 is offered with a 3.3 kW AC Charger that can fully charge the car in around 10 hours. It also supports fast charging. We are not quite sure what the exact charging power but since the brochure claims a 20-80% charge in ~50 minutes, it can be estimated that this car supports a fast charging anywhere between 25 to 30 kW.

For budget-conscious buyers, the pricing makes sense, especially when paired with the aggressive schemes currently on offer. CG Motors is pushing the model with a 4-lakh down payment plan, additional cash discounts, and complimentary accessories, which certainly makes the deal look tempting.
However, the bigger concern lies beyond pricing and specifications. As discussed earlier in this article, Dayun’s new energy division is going through financial uncertainty, and it remains unclear whether the brand can establish long-term stability in the market. This uncertainty inevitably spills over into the Nepali context as well.
CG Motors appears to be in a difficult position. The company is working with limited and often unclear information from China, which makes it challenging to communicate a confident long-term roadmap to potential buyers. Adding to the pressure, a large number of 2024-model Dayun vehicles are already sitting at the dry port, waiting for customers who are proving hard to find. Hence, the heavy discounts and attractive schemes.
On the reassurance front, CG Motors has stated that it will honor all previously announced and upcoming warranty commitments (8-year or 150,000 km warranty on the battery and motor, along with a five-year or 120,000 km warranty on the vehicle chassis). The company also highlights its supplier network on its official website, covering components such as the electric motor, motor controller, braking system, glass, and high-voltage wiring, etc. This seems to be an attempt to assure buyers that spare parts and essential components can still be sourced independently, even if the situation at the manufacturer’s end remains uncertain.
That said, from a buyer’s perspective, skipping the Yuehu S1 and opting for a more established EV with clearer long-term backing may be the wiser decision.

Let us put the Dayun Yuehu S1 head-to-head with the BYD Atto 1 and see how they stack up. For this comparison, we consider the top-spec BYD Atto 1 Premium variant, which is priced at around Rs. 33 lakhs in Nepal.
Starting with size and proportions, the BYD Atto 1 is the larger car overall. Its longer wheelbase gives it better cabin stability and noticeably improved rear-seat comfort. The Yuehu S1 strikes back with a much higher 201 mm ground clearance, which is genuinely useful on broken Nepali roads, especially when compared to the Atto 1’s 175 mm. Boot space slightly favors the Yuehu S1 at 255 liters, while the Atto 1 offers 230 liters. That additional weight, however, exists for good reason. The Yuehu S1 uses a 30.66 kWh ternary NMC battery, while the Atto 1 comes equipped with a larger 38.88 kWh LFP Blade battery. LFP batteries are less energy-dense than NMC units, which means they need more physical mass to deliver a comparable range. This is where engineering makes the difference. Built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 and using the Blade Battery architecture, the Atto 1 manages to deliver a 300 km WLTP-rated range. This figure is far more realistic than the Yuehu S1’s 300 km CLTC claim and highlights the Atto 1’s superior powertrain efficiency despite its higher kerb weight.
Beyond range, the Atto 1 also holds a clear advantage in battery safety and durability. BYD’s LFP Blade Battery is widely regarded as one of the safest battery technologies currently in mass production. The Atto 1 further benefits from cell-to-body tech, which improves structural rigidity and crash safety. This engineering advantage gets added with a stronger safety package, including more airbags and a broader set of active safety and convenience features than what the Yuehu S1 offers.
The final and most decisive factor is brand stability and long-term ownership. This is where the comparison becomes heavily one-sided. BYD stands as one of the global leaders in electric vehicle technology and battery manufacturing, while Dayun continues to struggle with uncertainty around its new energy business. In the Nepali market, BYD commands a level of trust and confidence that Dayun simply does not enjoy at this point, and it seems unlikely that it ever will.
For roughly an additional Rs. 2 lakhs, the BYD Atto 1 offers better battery technology, a more realistic range, stronger safety credentials, and significantly greater peace of mind.
This comparison might sound like a one-way narrative of showing how less capable the Yuehu S1 is compared to Atto 1, but this showdown was mainly done to make buyers realize what they can get for their bucks. On a broader note, there are still other EVs that you may consider, such as the hottest-selling hatchback: Nammi 01 EV, the powerful: Leapmotor T03, or even the OG: Tata Tiago EV, instead of the Dayun Yuehu S1.
