Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch Overview

Design

Similar to the 14-inch MacBook Pro, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is also available in a new space black color. Apple says the finish features a chemistry that forms an anodization seal to reduce fingerprints.

Apart from that, it has the same aluminum enclosure design borrowed from 2021’s MacBook Pro 14-inch.

The MacBook Pro with M3 Pro and M3 Max have the same ports as the last models: an HDMI port, an SD card slot, a MagSafe 3 charger, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and three Thunderbolt 4 ports.

Display

Similar to earlier models, the M3 MacBook Pro 16-inch has a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with a notch that houses a 1080p webcam.

It is a mini-LED display that can deliver up to 1,000 nits of sustained brightness, 1,600 nits of peak brightness, and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. SDR content is now displayed at up to 600 nits, which is 20 percent brighter than before.

It also has Apple’s ProMotion technology, which allows for a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate.

Hardware

The major change in this new MacBook Pro is the M3 chip. The 16.2-inch MacBook Pro is equipped with M3 Pro and M3 Max chips. These are the first chips for a personal computer built using 3-nanometer technology.

The M3 features a new technology called Dynamic Caching. Using this technology, the GPU allocates the use of local memory in hardware in real time so only the exact amount of memory needed is used for each task. Apple says this dramatically increases GPU utilization and performance for the most demanding pro apps and games.

The GPU also brings new rendering features to Apple silicon, including hardware-accelerated mesh shading for greater capability and efficiency with geometry processing, enabling more visually complex scenes. And hardware-accelerated ray tracing comes to the Mac for the first time, enabling games to render more accurate shadows and reflections to create more realistic environments.

The MacBook Pro 16″ comes with only one variant of M3 Pro that has a 12-core CPU and 18-core GPU. It comes with 18GB or 36GB unified memory and 512GB/1TB/2TB/4TB SSD storage.

The M3 Max MacBook Pro is available in two configurations: 14-core CPU with 30-core GPU; and 16-core CPU with 40-core GPU. It comes with up to 128GB unified memory and up to 8TB SSD storage.

Battery

All 16-inch MacBook Pros come with 100Wh battery and Apple claims up to 22 hours of Apple TV app movie playback.

The laptop comes with a 140W USB-C Power Adapter which supports fast charging.
