Apple replaced the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar model this time with the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Previously, the MacBook Pro 14″ was only available with the higher-end Pro or Max chips, while this time, it also comes with the standard M3 chip.

Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch Overview

Design

Design-wise, the M3 chips-powered MacBook Pros look the same as the MacBook Pro 14-inch 2021 with an aluminum enclosure.

One way to differentiate the new MacBook Pro is through the color. It is now also available in space black. Apple says the finish features a chemistry that forms an anodization seal to reduce fingerprints.

M3 Pro and M3 Max models are also available in silver, and the 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M3 is available in silver and space gray.

The MacBook Pro with M3 Pro and M3 Max have the same ports as the last models: an HDMI port, an SD card slot, a MagSafe 3 charger, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and three Thunderbolt 4 ports.

However, the 14-inch MacBook with the vanilla M3 chip, which replaces the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, has one less USB-C port, totaling two ports that only support Thunderbolt 3 instead of Thunderbolt 4.

Display

Similar to earlier models, the M3 MacBook Pro 14-inch has a 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with a notch that houses a 1080p webcam.

It is a mini-LED display that can deliver up to 1,000 nits of sustained brightness, 1,600 nits of peak brightness, and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. SDR content is now displayed at up to 600 nits, which is 20 percent brighter than before.

It also has Apple’s ProMotion technology, which allows for a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate.

Hardware

The major change in this new MacBook Pro is the M3 chip. M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max are the first chips for a personal computer built using 3-nanometer technology.

The M3 features a new technology called Dynamic Caching. Using this technology, the GPU allocates the use of local memory in hardware in real time so only the exact amount of memory needed is used for each task. Apple says this dramatically increases GPU utilization and performance for the most demanding pro apps and games.

The GPU also brings new rendering features to Apple silicon, including hardware-accelerated mesh shading for greater capability and efficiency with geometry processing, enabling more visually complex scenes. And hardware-accelerated ray tracing comes to the Mac for the first time, enabling games to render more accurate shadows and reflections to create more realistic environments.

The base MacBook Pro with M3 has an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU. It comes with 8GB unified memory and 512GB SSD storage. However, it can be configured to 16GB or 24GB unified memory and up to 2TB SSD, but it is not user-replaceable.

The M3 Pro MacBook Pro is available in two configurations: 11-core CPU with 14-core GPU; and 12-core CPU with 18-core GPU. It comes with 18GB or 36GB unified memory and up to 4TB SSD storage.

M3 Max, on the other hand, comes with either a 14-core CPU with a 30-core GPU or a 16-core CPU with a 40-core GPU. The unified memory ranges from 36GB to 128GB, while the SSD can be configured up to 8TB.

Battery

The base 14-inch MacBook Pro with M3 has the same 70Wh battery and Apple claims up to 22 hours of Apple TV app movie playback.

The higher M3 Pro and M3 Max 14-inch MacBook Pro, on the other hand, have a 72.4 Wh battery. Due to more powerful processors, these laptops have a rated 18 hours of Apple TV app movie playback.

The base M3 and M3 Pro with 11-core CPU models of MacBook Pro 14-inch come with a 70W USB-C Power Adapter. With higher models, the laptop comes with a 96W USB-C Power Adapter which supports fast charging.
