Xiaomi Watch S5 46mm Is Here in Nepal: A Long-Awaited Comeback

While the budget Redmi Watch series has been available in Nepal since the Watch 2, Xiaomi’s more premium lineup, the Xiaomi Watch series, hasn’t seen the light of day in Nepal since the original Xiaomi Watch S1 all the way back in 2022. Well, that changes now with the launch of the Xiaomi Watch S5.

However, the Watch S5 isn’t Xiaomi’s top-of-the-line smartwatch; that title belongs to the Watch 5, a series that hasn’t entered Nepal, like ever. Think of the Watch S5 as a premium-lite smartwatch compared to the Watch 5, and with that context out of the way, let’s get into the pricing.

With that pricing, there’s one particular competitor it stands against: the Huawei Watch GT 6, which I personally loved. With similar pricing and specs, comparisons are bound to happen. So let’s see what the Watch S5 brings to the table.

Xiaomi Watch S5 46mm Overview

Like every other Xiaomi Watch series, the Watch S5 also features a circular design. And it’s a chunky watch, with a diameter of 46mm. Last year, the Watch S4 came in two sizes: the Watch S4 41mm, which obviously had a 41mm diameter, and the standard Watch S4, which had a massive 47.3mm diameter. So that does raise the question: could a bigger Watch S5 variant be on the way too?

Apart from how big the watch is diameter-wise, it’s also pretty chunky, coming in at 11mm thick. Combine that with the 46g weight, and the watch definitely stands out on the wrist. So it seems like this one is better suited for buyers with bigger wrists.

Anyway, the Watch S5 is entirely made from stainless steel, which is pretty common for a semi-premium smartwatch. The front is glass, as expected, and it looks like a sapphire crystal front is reserved only for the more premium Xiaomi Watch 5.

The bezel comes in three material options depending on the color you pick. The Black and Silver variants get a stainless steel bezel, the Ceramic Blue option swaps in a ceramic bezel, and the Jungle Green variant goes with a forged carbon bezel instead. There’s also a rotating crown and a secondary button on the side, so there’s really no need to touch the screen for most things. Your fingerprints will thank you.

For the strap, the watch uses a quick-release spring bar mechanism. It’s not as convenient as the slide-and-lock mechanism we’ve seen on the cheaper Redmi Watch 6, but it still gets the job done.

Moving to the display, the actual panel size is close to Huawei’s Watch GT 6, coming in at 1.48 inches. However, the Watch S5 packs in more pixels, 480×480 compared to 466×466 on the GT 6. So with an identical display size but more pixels, the pixel density also comes out slightly ahead at 323PPI. Side by side, you likely won’t notice any major difference in sharpness, but it’s a nice edge on paper.

The Watch S5, like the more premium Watch 5, doesn’t carry an official IP rating but is rated 5ATM, meaning it can withstand water pressure equivalent to 50 meters. Pretty typical for smartwatches in this range. Xiaomi hasn’t mentioned an official refresh rate, but for a watch at this price, it’s safe to assume a 60Hz panel. Xiaomi would have to be out of its mind to ship a 30Hz screen here.

And the most important number of all, brightness, which in my opinion matters a lot, since a dim screen on a sunny day makes even the best display useless. Xiaomi has this covered, with 2,500 nits of peak brightness and 1,500 nits in HBM mode, so even under direct sunlight, you should be able to read the screen without much trouble.

The Watch S5 runs HyperOS 3 and connects via Bluetooth 5.4. It’s compatible with both Android and iPhone, though Android devices need to be running Android 8.0 or newer, while iPhones require iOS 14.0 or later.

To pair the watch, you’ll need Xiaomi’s Mi Fitness app, which handles setup, health tracking, firmware updates, workout history, and watch face downloads.

However, Xiaomi hasn’t mentioned any official internal storage figure. And seeing that even cheaper watches like the Huawei Watch Fit 5 and Xiaomi’s own Redmi Watch 6 come with storage specified, the silence here feels like a bit of an odd omission for a watch at this price.

For positioning, the Watch S5 supports GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo, using dual GNSS antennas for more accurate tracking. Xiaomi also mentions over 150 sports modes on board, along with an upgraded cycling mode for more detailed ride tracking.

On the health side, the watch uses an upgraded 4 LED and 4 photodiode sensor system for heart rate and blood oxygen tracking, with Xiaomi claiming 98.40% monitoring accuracy. There’s also sleep tracking with HRV analysis, stress monitoring, and weekly and monthly sleep reports.

There’s NFC on board too, but seeing that NFC payments still aren’t widely used in Nepal, it’s a feature most local buyers probably won’t get much use out of for now.

Battery life continues to be one of Xiaomi’s strongest selling points. Inside sits an 815mAh battery, which Xiaomi claims can last up to 21 days under light use, around 14 days with typical use, and roughly 9 days with the always-on display turned on under normal use. Lastly, the Watch S5 charges through a magnetic charging system, which attaches quickly and securely.

As much as I want to like the Watch S5, I can’t ignore how it stacks up against the Huawei Watch GT 6 at a similar price. In my opinion, the GT 6 is simply the better watch here. Not to forget, it comes with 64GB of internal storage, a sturdier build, an IP69 rating, wireless charging support, and even Wi-Fi 2.4GHz alongside Bluetooth 6.0. Nearly every spec favors the GT 6, and it starts at a noticeably lower price too.

So, while the Watch S5 does bring genuine strengths to the table, its sharper display, brighter panel, and Xiaomi’s software ecosystem- it’s hard to recommend it over the GT 6 purely on value. If you’re already invested in Xiaomi’s ecosystem, the Watch S5 makes sense. But if you’re simply looking for the better smartwatch at this price in Nepal, the GT 6 is the one I’d point you toward.
