VG Impex, the authorized distributor of GWM in Nepal, already sells models like the Haval and ORA, but it is now pushing its lineup beyond pure electric with a stronger focus on hybrids. The hybrid space is still young in Nepal, yet GWM appears to have a clear roadmap. As evident from its decision to introduce the Tank 300 and Tank 500, which are no mere “just” hybrids. In fact, they are internationally acclaimed for being a capable alternative and even one of the best for their class.

For reference, GWM has sold over 250,000 units of the Tank 300 in regions such as Australia, the Middle East, and South Africa. It revives the classic boxy, rugged character of old-school off-roaders, mixes it with the modern hybrid powertrain, and packs a myriad of contemporary tech for a luxurious and comfortable drive from pavements to rough roads.

Well, the price is still premium, yes, but considering what this vehicle brings to the table, it justifies the asking.

GWM Tank 300 Overview

Exterior

The GWM Tank 300 embodies a neo-retro design language and pays a homage to classic off-road icons spanning to the Cold War-era military off-roaders like the Beijing BJ212. Its design philosophy revolves around the “luxury adventure” concept, which is a hallmark of GWM’s Tank sub-brand. Moreover, you can feel the sturdiness of the car through its exterior, which can be attributed to its ladder-frame chassis.

The front fascia looks like something out of your grandfather’s era. The circular bisected lights, compact grille, rib design at the bonnet, and wide blacked-out front surround stays true to its design language. But, at least the lighting element is an LED setup for the sake of modern flair. Below the bumper, skid elements to tackle off-roads and since it has a towing utility as a design, you can even fit an optional winch.

On another note, the design choice of such an aggressive squared off fascia with an appreciable overhang can somewhat limit the approach angles in uphill terrains.

Viewed from the side, the Tank 300’s boxy and square silhouette becomes evident. The flared wheel arches and chunky cladding gives the profile a muscular stance but at this point, I’ll say: Too much plastic! The top is crowned by functional roof rails so your off-road equipment and utilities can go there pretty easily.

On a closer look, the visibility for driver is quite good with slim A-pillars and good size mirrors. Although the B and C-pillars are quite thick and might create some blind spots here and there, the surround view camera will help in mitigating that.

The size of the wheels is mentioned to be 17 inches but variants of this car features 18-inch wheels and the decrement in wheel size is not something to welcome for this segment. Beside this, the alloy finish is kept intact. The vehicle offers a ground clearance of 224 mm, and given the tall nature of the car, side step come as standard.

At the rear, the slim vertical taillights give a modern twist on its retro roots. The rear reminds a little of the classic Land Rover due to the spare tire mounted on the tailgate. A very thoughtful feature here is the integration of rear view camera on the center of this spare wheel. In case you forgot to close your rear door and start reversing, you will know it instantly… very ingenious.

For exterior color options, it is available in Grey, Orange, Red, Black, and White colors.

Interior

The inside of the Tank 300 contrasts with its brutish exterior. It’s quite a simple layout, but an upscale design with clean, squared-off lines carries the neo-retro theme on the inside as well.

The rectangular dash layout is straightforward with contrast stitching on synthetic “Nappa Leather” seats which is known to be of a premium kind. Along with a good touch, these leatherette seats can be expected to be comfortable as well with multiple degrees of adjustment especially for the front seats.

The driver’s seat comes with 8 modes of adjustments along with memory &welcome function, lumbar support, massage, and ventilation functions. And, the front row passenger offer 4 modes of power adjustments along with the ventilation function. So, even though it’s an off-road duty vehicle, the creature comfort is well taken care of.

Talking about other modern touches, there are two 12.3-inch displays to be used as the infotainment screen (supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and instrument cluster. Just below the infotainment, there are some playful luxury like chrome circular vents, an aluminum-like passenger side motif, and a quirky robot-fist level.

The steering wheel can be adjusted in four directions, and drivers can choose between Sport, Comfort, and Light modes to match their driving preferences. And, it also comes with a heating feature.

The Noise-Vibration-Harshness (NVH) suppression inside the car can be considered luxurious as well. So while the car crushes its way through rocks, twigs, and carves it way through air, you will be cocooned inside properly isolated. But if you want to create your own environment, there are 8 Infinity speakers throughout the cabin, dual zone climate control, and an electrically operated sunroof which basically means you are the master of elements inside the car controlling sound, air, temperature, and light.

And before you ask, it does come in black. In fact, the interior is only available in black theme.

Performance

Tank 300 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged, 4-Cylinders Engine, which is further complemented by an Electric Powertrain with a 78 kW of motor and 37 kWh Ternery Battery, making it a Hybrid Electric Vehicle. And for the most part, the reason you are paying nearly Rs. 1.60 Crores is because of this complex engine.

The petrol engine produces 244 PS of max power and 380 Nm of max torque. The additional electric powertrain produces 106 PS of max power and 268 Nm of max torque. Combined, this hybrid system produces a max power of 351 PS and 648 Nm of torque. These power figures, especially if you are an enthusiast who talk in the language of horsepower and PS, you know are pretty good.

For transmission, it uses a 9-Speed Auto Transmission (9HAT).

Besides the raw performance numbers, Tank 300 being an off-road capable vehicle has All-Terrain Mode Selection, Crawl Control, Four-Wheel Drive System, and an off-road suitable suspension setup. Here’s a little breakdown of how these systems work for an off-drive duty vehicle as this:

  • All Terrain Modes: These modes adjust the traction and throttle settings for conditions like mud, sand, snow, or rocky roads. The purpose of these settings is to help the Tank 300 maintain balance in the unpredictable offroad conditions.
  • Crawl Control: This feature is a low-speed cruise control that can keep forward motion in steep climbs, down hills, or over rocks without needing to continuously throttle and break.
  • 4WD System: This is a system with a high and low range that supplies power to all four wheels to maximize grip in off-road conditions. This is especially useful for off-roading in mud, loose gravel, or even in technical off-road conditions.

Additionally, it can reach a top speed of 170 Km/h and can accelerate from 0 to 100 Km/h in 8 seconds.

Additional Details

Double Cross Arm and Multi-link Independent Suspension handles the suspension duties.

The dimensions are 4760 mm long, 1930 mm wide, and 1903 mm height. Moreover, the wheelbase is 2750 mm. And, the kerb weight is 2313 kg.

It gets a ground clearance of 224 mm. And, the wading depth which basically means the maximum water depth a vehicle can drive through without causing damage to its engine or electrical systems, for Tank 300 is 700 mm.

Additionally, the Tank 300 gets a 400-liter cargo space, which is expandable up to 1635 liters.

Rivals

Something I’ve deliberately held off mentioning until now is the obvious resemblance between the GWM Tank 300 and the Jeep Wrangler. The similarity is so strong that you almost do a double-take. Taking inspiration is not a crime, but it raises a genuine question. Has GWM actually managed to design a more compelling off-road SUV than the iconic Wrangler?

When you look at the performance figures, the Tank 300 pulls ahead. Its hybrid powertrain gives it noticeably higher power and torque, and the efficiency advantage means it can cover longer distances on a single tank. On paper, the Wrangler struggles to match that, especially because it still relies on a traditional combustion setup.

But off-road pedigree is where the story shifts. The Wrangler carries decades of legacy. Its roots stretch back to World War II, when it earned a reputation for durability, body-on-frame toughness, solid axles, and the kind of trail ability that shaped its cult status. The Tank 300, meanwhile, is still a newcomer learning its place in the off-road world. Enthusiasts have welcomed it, and it has proved that it’s more than just a look-alike, but it doesn’t carry the Wrangler’s historic credibility.

Choosing between these two often comes down to personality and priorities. Do you want heritage and proven capability or modern tech with a fresh attitude? Pricing also swings the argument heavily in favour of the Tank 300, which comes in almost Rs 1.30 crore cheaper than the Wrangler. That gap alone will make buyers think twice.

It will be interesting to see how the Tank 300 performs in the Nepali market. The hardcore off-road segment is small, but buyers in this niche pay attention. If the Tank 300 delivers what it promises, it could shake things up more than expected.
