This model feels like a mix of two of Vivo’s existing budget devices, combining elements to create a balanced package. On paper, it looks solid, but can it deliver on that front?

The Vivo Y21d borrows its design language from the recently launched Vivo Y31, while most of its specs are lifted almost directly from the Vivo Y19s.

That combination works in its favor. You get the premium aesthetics of the Y31 paired with the tried-and-tested internals of the Y19s Pro, a mix that, at this price point, seems like a smart move from Vivo. In a way, it seems like the Y21d offers the best of both worlds.

Let’s further dive into the specs and see if that’s true.

Vivo Y21d Overview

Design

The Vivo Y21d doesn’t look all that different from the Y31, which also launched back in September. Both phones share nearly identical dimensions and even the same camera module design.

On the back, you’ll find a dual-camera setup with a flashy camera ring and dual LED flash. The flat plastic frame paired with a quad-curved rear panel doesn’t bring much uniqueness either. Along the side rails, you get the usual volume rocker and a power button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner.

What does stand out, however, is the phone’s durability claims. The Y21d is rated IP68, IP69, and IP69+ for dust and water resistance. According to Vivo, the “IP69+” badge means this model not only meets the water-resistance standards of IP68 and IP69 but has also passed three consecutive rounds of IP69 water resistance tests.

Display

Flip the phone over and you’re greeted with a 6.68-inch LCD panel. It offers an HD+ resolution (720 × 1608 pixels) with a 90Hz refresh rate. Sure, it’s not the sharpest screen out there, but for this price range, it gets the job done.

Vivo has also pushed the brightness fairly well. The panel supports up to 1000 nits in High Brightness Mode (HBM). Indoors, that’s more than enough, but under harsh sunlight, you’ll likely find yourself squinting to make out details.

Still, for a budget phone, these numbers aren’t bad at all.

Hardware

Remember how I said the design feels borrowed from the Vivo Y31? Well, on the inside, the Y21d is actually closer to the Vivo Y19s Pro from late 2024.

At its core, the phone runs on a UNISOC T7225. Despite the slightly different naming, it’s essentially the same T612 chip used in the Y19s. In terms of performance, it’s nothing groundbreaking.

For instance, even the Redmi A5, an entry-level device, ships with the UNISOC T615, which edges out the T612 in raw speed. And if you compare it to similarly priced devices like the HMD Crest or Moto G35, the Y21d starts looking less competitive, at least from a chipset perspective.

Memory specs don’t do much to change that picture either. You’re looking at 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of eMMC 5.1 storage, decent, but far from futureproof. On the plus side, Vivo does include a Hybrid SIM slot that supports microSD expansion up to 1TB, which should help if storage becomes tight.

Cameras

The Y21d carries over the exact same camera setup as the Y19s. On the back, you get a 50MP main sensor paired with a 0.08MP auxiliary lens, accompanied by a small ring light just below the camera.

Up front, there’s a 5MP selfie shooter neatly housed inside a punch-hole cutout. Video recording is capped at 1080p@30fps from both the front and rear cameras, which is fairly standard for an entry-level device.

Battery and OS

The Vivo Y21d packs a massive 6,500mAh cell, paired with 44W fast charging. For a budget device, that’s a standout spec, especially since most phones in this price range top out at 18W or, at best, 33W. In this category, Vivo has definitely outdone the competition.

On the software side, the Y21d Pro ships with Android 15, layered with Vivo’s Funtouch OS 15. However, Vivo hasn’t yet disclosed how many years of updates the phone will receive.

The Vivo Y21d came as a bit of a surprise. At first glance, it didn’t look all that special, just another budget phone priced around Rs. 20,000, with a low-value processor and a half-decent display.

My initial reaction was even less enthusiastic when I noticed it was powered by the same processor found in phones nearly half the price. But performance isn’t the only deciding factor in the budget segment.

What buyers truly value here is durability, a massive battery, and reliable fast charging, and that’s exactly where the Vivo Y21d delivers.
