Redmi Note 17 Pro Max Launched in Nepal: Not the Max Upgrade We Hoped For

There’s a new Pro Max in town, and it’s not the new iPhone 18 Pro Max. I’m talking about the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G.

Following the launch of the Redmi 17, Xiaomi has now launched the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G in Nepal along with the Redmi Note 17, Redmi Note 17 5G, and Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G is the successor to the Redmi Note 15 Pro+. And with this generation, Xiaomi has also resurrected the Pro Max branding for its Note series.

The Pro Max name seems to make sense as well, with the Note 17 Pro Max bringing a Max battery, Max durability, and Max software support. But there’s only one thing I can clearly see being very “Max”—the pricing.

Although the price hike isn’t as significant as we expected, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max might not exactly be the “Max” upgrade we were hoping for. Yes, it comes with a bigger battery, better protection, and longer software support, but there are some key downgrades to consider.

So, let’s check out whether this Pro Max is actually an all-out upgrade!

Redmi Note 17 Pro Max Overview

I like how Xiaomi has moved away from the circular camera module design and opted for a square camera module across the entire Redmi Note 17 series. There are still some subtle differences between the phones, with the Pro Max variant featuring a subtle vertical contour on top of the square camera island.

Likewise, Xiaomi is taking durability up a notch with the Note 17 Pro Max, advertising it with “Titan Quality”. The phone comes with IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K ratings, along with TÜV certification for up to 72 hours of water endurance at a depth of 2 meters. It also gets an Underwater Mode in the camera app and a 3-meter drop-resistance certification.

Despite these upgrades, the materials remain similar to the Note 15 Pro+, with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front, a plastic frame, and a plastic back. However, the Note 17 Pro Max now has a completely flat design on both the front and rear, whereas the Note 15 Pro+ had slight curves around the edges of the body.

The display panel seems identical to the Note 15 Pro+, as it retains the same 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. However, the peak brightness has slightly increased from 3,200 nits to 3,500 nits, which should offer better visibility under direct sunlight.

So, I like the design, and the display’s fine as well. But once I saw the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chipset in the spec list, I was utterly disappointed. That’s a serious downgrade from the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 on the Redmi Note 15 Pro+.

Both are 4nm chipsets, but the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 offers better performance, while the 6 Gen 5 brings newer connectivity features like Wi-Fi 7. Personally, I’d take better performance any day over faster Wi-Fi connectivity.

And honestly, this feels like one of the areas where Xiaomi has cut costs to balance out the price hike. The phone is already more expensive than its predecessor, but instead of giving us a more powerful chipset, Xiaomi has actually gone backwards here.

As for memory, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max comes in two variants. The 8GB RAM variant is paired with 256GB of storage, while the 12GB RAM variant comes with 512GB of storage. And the storage here is UFS 4.1, but that’s funny because the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 does not natively support UFS 4.1 speeds.

While Xiaomi mentions a flagship-level camera system, the dual-camera setup doesn’t exactly fit the Pro Max tagline. On top of that, the camera system might actually be a downgrade, as Xiaomi has dropped the 200MP 1/1.4-inch Samsung ISOCELL sensor in favor of a 50MP 1/1.95-inch OmniVision sensor for the main camera. Meanwhile, the 8MP ultrawide and 32MP selfie camera remain the same.

Finally, this is where the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max actually feels “Pro Max” with its massive 10,000mAh silicon-carbon battery. That’s a huge upgrade from the 6,500mAh battery on the Note 15 Pro+. The charging speed, though, remains the same at 100W wired. However, reverse charging has been bumped up to 27W, so you can actually use the phone as a power bank now.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max ships with the company’s latest HyperOS 3 running on top of Android 16. And Xiaomi has promised 4 major Android OS upgrades and 6 Years of security patches.

So, is the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max actually a Pro Max upgrade? Well, it’s a bit of a mixed bag.

You get a massive 10,000mAh battery, significantly better durability, a brighter display, longer software support, and faster reverse charging. But at the same time, Xiaomi has made some questionable compromises, especially with the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chipset and the 50MP main camera.

And that’s where the Rs. 69,999 starting price becomes difficult to justify. The Note 17 Pro Max does bring some genuinely “Max” upgrades, but Xiaomi seems to have cut back on performance and cameras to make room for those upgrades.

So, if battery life and durability are your top priorities, there’s a lot to like here. But if you’re looking for an all-round upgrade from the Note 15 Pro+, I’d say the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max isn’t quite the Pro Max upgrade we were hoping for.
