Redmi Buds 8 Launched in Nepal: Budget Earbud No More

The Redmi Buds series has always been what the Redmi Note series is in the smartphone world. A more budget-friendly option with specs that beat more premium offerings. And this year’s iteration, the Redmi Buds 8, just arrived in Nepal as we enter August.

It’s a big deal too, cause Nepal never got the last Redmi Buds, the Redmi Buds 6. Sure, we got the 6 Play, 6 Active, and 6 Lite, but the top-tier model never made it here. So it’s genuinely a big deal that the flagship model is finally entering Nepal after a year-long gap.

So the question now is, does the Redmi Buds 8 actually justify jumping into this new, pricier territory? It’s not like we haven’t seen these kinds of features before. So let’s get into what the Buds 8 actually brings to the table, and whether it’s worth stretching your budget for.

One thing Redmi has never really been consistent with is the design of its Buds lineup. The Redmi Buds 4 came in an egg-shaped charging case, the Buds 5 switched to a clamshell design, and the Buds 6 largely stuck with that same formula. Now, the Redmi Buds 8 changes things up yet again.

This time, the charging case looks more like the Redmi Buds 6 Lite, with the earbuds standing upright instead of lying flat. I also like that Redmi has brought back the Battery Indicator Light Strip 2, which we first saw on the Buds 6. It gives you a quick glance at the case’s remaining battery whenever you flip it open, a small feature that’s surprisingly handy.

As for the earbuds themselves, Redmi has gone with its familiar stem design. The company calls it a semi-in-ear fit, but judging from the silicone ear tips, it looks and fits much closer to a regular in-ear earbud. Both the earbuds and the charging case also carry an IP54 rating, so they should handle sweat and light rain just fine.

Moving on to audio, the Buds 8 packs an 11mm driver that supports Hi-Res audio. Alongside that, you also get active noise cancellation rated up to 50dB, which Redmi claims can block out up to 20% more noise compared to before.

And when you do need to hear your surroundings, there are three transparency modes to choose from. The Regular mode lets in natural ambient sound, Enhanced Voice focuses on conversations so you don’t have to remove the earbuds, while Enhanced Ambient Sound amplifies your surroundings even further, making it useful when walking through busy streets.

Call quality also gets some attention. The Redmi Buds 8 use a triple-microphone setup with AI call noise cancellation, capable of reducing wind noise at speeds of up to 12m/s. So, even on windy days, your voice should come through much clearer during calls.

For those who like tweaking their audio, Xiaomi includes five EQ presets along with personalized sound tuning. While it’s a nice addition, customizable EQ has become fairly standard in this price segment, so it isn’t exactly a standout feature anymore.

The earbuds connect over Bluetooth 5.4 and support dual-device connectivity, allowing you to stay connected to two devices simultaneously. There’s also Audio Sharing, letting two pairs of Redmi Buds 8 listen to the same audio source at once. The catch is that the second pair also needs to be a Redmi Buds 8.

Battery life is decent, though nothing out of the ordinary. Each earbud packs a 54mAh battery, while the charging case houses a 475mAh unit.

With ANC turned off, the earbuds can last for up to eleven hours, extending to forty-four hours with the charging case. Turn ANC on, and that drops to around six and a half hours on the earbuds or up to twenty-eight hours in total with the case.

And if you’re running low, a quick 10-minute charge is enough for up to four hours of music playback or around one and a half hours of calling, which is always nice to have before heading out.

The Buds 8 does bring a lot to the table. Solid ANC, genuinely useful noise cancellation for calls, and a bunch of premium-feeling touches that make it feel like a proper upgrade over its predecessors. On paper, it’s easily the most capable Redmi Buds we’ve seen so far.

But that pricing changes everything. The Redmi Buds series never started out this way. It was always about giving people good sound quality at a price that just about anyone could afford. That’s exactly why the lineup built such a loyal following in Nepal in the first place.

Crossing the Rs. 10,000 mark shifts the Buds 8 into a different category altogether, one that’s no longer affordable for most Nepali buyers. And that’s the real disappointment here. The Buds 8 might be the best Redmi Buds yet on merit, but it’s also the first one that starts to feel out of reach for the very audience that made this series what it is.
