Nepal has finally welcomed 1 million foreigners in the year 2017, writes Online Khabar. The goal set about almost 19 years ago has now been fulfilled as the country welcomed one million and sixty thousand foreigners in the year 2017.
The goal was set in the year 1998 by the government in Visit Nepal 1998 campaign. However, it failed to meet the target and has been fulfilled almost after 2 decades.
Even if the target has been met, Tourism entrepreneurs claim that the tourism impact is still low as the target set by the government is lagging behind. According to them, the target should be around welcoming at least 1.5 to 2.5 million tourists every year.
CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli-led government in 2016 had announced to mark 2018 as the Visit Nepal Year again in a bid to welcome one million tourists. The country, however, met the target one year earlier without announcing any campaign.
“Our long-awaited dream has come true“, said Nepal Tourism Board Chief Executive Officer Deepak Raj Joshi. He added that they will make efforts to increase the number in the days to come.
In 2012 the country witnessed 803,000 foreigners which was the highest number of tourists before 2017.
