ASUS Debuts the Vivobook S 15 with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Processor

At an online launch event held by Asus on May 21, 2024, the company announced a new AI-focused, Qualcomm processor-powered laptop, and named it the Vivobook S 15. The laptop is set to arrive in Nepal soon.

The Asus Vivobook S 15 is yet another one of Asus’s laptops that jumps into the AI bandwagon. However, unlike Asus’s previous laptops that only had a dedicated Copilot key slapped on, the S 15 is built from the ground up to dive head-first into the AI landscape.

This laptop, like the ones before it, features a dedicated Microsoft Copilot key, but this time, Asus has included a Qualcomm CPU with a dedicated neural processor that’s optimized to run more advanced and powerful AI-related workloads.

Asus Vivobook S 15 2024 Overview

Design

The Asus Vivobook S 15 features a premium all-metal build, reminiscent of higher-end Vivobook counterparts. Its design is minimalistic and monotone, with the only notable feature being the ‘ASUS VIVOBOOK’ engraving on the lid.

The interior is plain, featuring only the Dolby Atmos and harman / kardon badges on both sides of the palm rest. Vents are also minimal, located solely on the back and underside of the laptop.

The Vivobook S 15 has a lay-flat hinge that allows for 180 degrees of screen motion. Its narrow bezels maximize the display area within a compact footprint, giving it a sleek and modern look. Weighing just 1.42 kg, this 15-inch laptop is also quite portable.

Display

Asus has included a quite impressive 15.6-inch OLED display with the Vivobook S 15. The display has a resolution of 2880 x 1620 pixels and a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz.

The display has a peak brightness of 600nits and is VESA-certified to support and display HDR content. With a display that supports 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, the Vivobook S 15 is great for graphic designing and colorwork as well.

One last feature of the Vivobook S 15 is the inclusion of an FHD camera with an IR sensor in the bezel. This means that the camera supports the Windows Hello biometric authentication feature.

Hardware and Connectivity

Powering the Asus Vivobook S 15 is either a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite or a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus SoC that combines the CPU, GPU, and NPU into a single die. Specs-wise, the only difference between the two processors is the number of cores, being 12 in Elite and 10 in Plus. Other specs like the cache size, threading capability, and processor clock speed are the same in both.

The included Qualcomm Oryon cores in the X chips have a clock speed of 3.4GHz and can process instructions up to 12 threads. Alongside the Oryon processor, there is Qualcomm’s Hexagon NPU which works in tandem with the processor to compute AI workloads at a rate of up to 45TOPS.

To cool the processor, the laptop comes with Asus’s Icecool thermal technology. Also included is a single-zone RGB backlit keyboard with a dedicated number pad.

Memory-wise, Asus Nepal has not stated which configurations will be arriving here in Nepal, but, looking at the spec sheets, the laptop supports up to 32GB of RAM and 1TB of PCIe 4.0 SSD.

AI Features

Now, let’s talk about the main reason why this laptop exists. The AI. Asus engineered this laptop alongside Microsoft and Qualcomm to produce their first Copilot+ PC that supports Windows AI features.

Copilot+ is a standard introduced and set by Microsoft that allows PCs to implement Copilot AI features more effectively. As Microsoft states, “Copilot+ PCs are the fastest, most intelligent Windows PCs ever built.” For a device to be considered a Copilot+ PC, It must have at least 16GB RAM, 256GB storage, and crucially, an on-board NPU that’s capable of computing 40 TOPS (trillions of operations per second).

While the company has dabbled into AI by implementing features like a dedicated Copilot key and Copilot+ features in its previous laptops, by including an AI-focused processor in the new Vivobook S 15, Copilot+ features like Asus AiSense IR camera, Live Captions, Live translation, Recall, Cocreator, Restyle, and Asus exclusive apps like StoryCube are now available.

Asus has went and stated that these new devices are the “future of consumer PCs and will drastically change the way we will work, study, create, and play.”

Battery

Asus has paired the Vivobook S 15 with a decent 70Wh battery that Asus claims will deliver over 18 hours of backup. The laptop also features Asus USB-C Easy Charge and supports 90W fast charging.

Asus Vivobook S 15 2024 Price in Nepal and Availability

The Asus Vivobook S 15 S5507 price in Nepal is yet to be announced. Once available, you will be able to purchase the device at Nagmani International and NeoStore authorized stores as well as online retailers.
