The Comet EV once led the mini electric vehicle segment, but it has recently been pushed to second place by the Kaiyi e-Qute 2, which edged ahead by a narrow margin. However, the segment as a whole appears to be losing momentum.

Despite favorable EV financing options and a shift in how buyers perceive electric cars, the overall import data shows a noticeable slowdown in the demand for mini EVs.

That said, the Comet EV still holds strong appeal for buyers seeking an affordable and unique electric vehicle. Its compact size and quirky design make it one of the most visually striking EVs on the road today.

Another thing that might be important to note is that the Comet EV shares its core design, features, and specifications with the Wuling Air EV. MG Motors has simply rebadged the vehicle for different markets. While this may cause some hesitation among prospective buyers, there’s no real cause for concern.

Both Wuling and MG operate under the SAIC Motor Corporation, meaning the research, development, and manufacturing processes remain consistent across both models.

Design

The MG Comet EV is a compact electric vehicle built specifically for city driving. It features a boxy and upright design that embraces minimalism, functionality, and efficient use of space. This design direction aligns with MG’s philosophy of “Emotion in Motion.”

At the front, the Comet EV blends retro and modern styling elements. A Full-Width LED light bar dominates the fascia, offering a sleek visual highlight while doubling as DRLs. Positioned just below this light bar is the charging port.

Moving on, the headlight setup varies by variant. Vertically stacked LED units at the bottom corners serve as the main headlights and fog lamps.

Viewed from the side, the Comet EV’s two-door hatchback layout and boxy proportions become even more noticeable. A short front overhang, tall stance, and flat roofline work together to maximize interior space.

But despite being under 3 meters in length, the car offers seating for four passengers. It rides on 12-inch Wheels equipped with low-resistance tires that help extend the driving range.

Performance

The MG Comet EV is available in two variants, both powered by a 31.26 kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). This motor generates a max power of 42 PS and max torque of 110 Nm, which can be considered to be a decent performance for daily urban use.

Moreover, the vehicle draws energy from a 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery, which according to the ARAI test claims can deliver a driving range of up to 230 kilometers on a single charge. And, using the standard 3.3 kW AC charger, the battery takes approximately 7 hours to charge from zero to full.

However, real-world usage tells a different story.

According to several user reports, the Comet EV typically offers a practical driving range between 150 and 180 kilometers under city conditions.

MG has also introduced an important update in the Play variant, which now supports 7 kW AC charging. With this faster charger, the vehicle can be fully charged in just 3 hours.

That said, the Comet still comes with a 3.3 kW charger as standard. Upgrading to the 7 kW charger involves an additional cost. Current estimates suggest that customers will have to spend around Rs. 1 Lakh extra to equip their vehicle with this higher-capacity charging unit.

On a funky note, the MG Comet EV can hit a top speed of 100 km/h and can accelerate from 0 to 60 kmph in 6.9 seconds.
