Pioneer Motors, the authorized distributor of MG vehicles in Nepal, continues to offer the MG Comet EV as its most affordable electric car in the market. With the latest update, MG is trying to make the Comet EV more competitive in the affordable electric car segment.

The Comet EV once led the mini electric vehicle segment, but it has recently been pushed to second place by the Kaiyi e-Qute 2, which edged ahead by a narrow margin. However, the segment as a whole appears to be losing momentum.

Despite favorable EV financing options and a shift in how buyers perceive electric cars, the overall import data shows a noticeable slowdown in the demand for mini EVs.

That said, the Comet EV still holds strong appeal for buyers seeking an affordable and unique electric vehicle. Its compact size and quirky design make it one of the most visually striking EVs on the road today.

Another thing that might be important to note is that the Comet EV shares its core design, features, and specifications with the Wuling Air EV. MG Motors has simply rebadged the vehicle for different markets. While this may cause some hesitation among prospective buyers, there’s no real cause for concern.

Both Wuling and MG operate under the SAIC Motor Corporation, meaning the research, development, and manufacturing processes remain consistent across both models.

Although both variants feature the same motor and battery capacity, they inherently differ in the features that set them apart. Also, it should be noted that the Executive and Excite variants are also referred to as Pace and Play, respectively.

Additionally,  MG Comet EV with an 8-year (or 120000Km) Warranty on the Battery, a 3-year (or 100000 KM) Warranty on High Voltage Components, and a 1 Year on the Vehicle.

With that said, let’s take a quick look at the MG Comet EV in Nepal along with its key specifications for 2025.

MG Comet EV Overview

Design

The MG Comet EV is a compact electric vehicle built specifically for city driving. It features a boxy and upright design that embraces minimalism, functionality, and efficient use of space. This design direction aligns with MG’s philosophy of “Emotion in Motion.”

At the front, the Comet EV blends retro and modern styling elements. A Full-Width LED light bar dominates the fascia, offering a sleek visual highlight while doubling as DRLs. Positioned just below this light bar is the charging port.

Moving on, the headlight setup varies by variant. Vertically stacked LED units at the bottom corners serve as the main headlights and fog lamps.

The Play (Excite) variant includes LED lighting, while the more affordable Pace (Executive) variant uses Halogen lights instead.

Viewed from the side, the Comet EV’s two-door hatchback layout and boxy proportions become even more noticeable. A short front overhang, tall stance, and flat roofline work together to maximize interior space.

But despite being under 3 meters in length, the car offers seating for four passengers. It rides on 12-inch Wheels equipped with low-resistance tires that help extend the driving range.

At the rear, the Comet EV echoes the front with another full-width LED light bar that functions as taillights. The tailgate remains flat and upright, helping to create some cargo space within the limited dimensions.

Inside, the cabin features fabric upholstery across all variants. The Play variant stands out slightly with a Leatherette-Wrapped Steering Wheel. In terms of instrumentation, the Play variant offers a 7.8-inch Touchscreen Infotainment System with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, paired with a 10.25-inch Digital Instrument Cluster.

The Pace variant lacks the touchscreen but includes a 7-inch Digital Cluster for essential driving information.

For comfort, both variants include manually controlled air conditioning and heating. The audio system consists of two speakers, providing only the basic entertainment functionality.

Performance

The MG Comet EV is available in two variants, both powered by a 31.26 kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). This motor generates a max power of 42 PS and max torque of 110 Nm, which can be considered to be a decent performance for daily urban use.

Moreover, the vehicle draws energy from a 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery, which according to the ARAI test claims can deliver a driving range of up to 230 kilometers on a single charge. And, using the standard 3.3 kW AC charger, the battery takes approximately 7 hours to charge from zero to full.

However, real-world usage tells a different story.

According to several user reports, the Comet EV typically offers a practical driving range between 150 and 180 kilometers under city conditions.

MG has also introduced an important update in the Play variant, which now supports 7 kW AC charging. With this faster charger, the vehicle can be fully charged in just 3 hours.

That said, the Comet still comes with a 3.3 kW charger as standard. Upgrading to the 7 kW charger involves an additional cost. Current estimates suggest that customers will have to spend around Rs. 1 Lakh extra to equip their vehicle with this higher-capacity charging unit.

On a funky note, the MG Comet EV can hit a top speed of 100 km/h and can accelerate from 0 to 60 kmph in 6.9 seconds.

Rivals

The current mini EV segment is currently being led by the Kaiyi e-Qute series, which was once led by the MG Comet EV. Now pushed to second place, the Comet EV faces stiff competition from the e-Qute lineup, particularly the e-Qute 02.

Comet EV is making a comeback with a fresh revamp, but the question remains whether it can meet the expectations of this competitive segment. In this comparison, we will focus on the Play variant of the Comet EV and the e-Qute 02, as both models are priced similarly.

Let’s begin with pricing, which often plays the most decisive role in this category. The Comet EV holds a slight advantage here, coming in Rs. 22,000 cheaper than the e-Qute 02. However, that marginal price difference starts to lose value once you consider the overall package.

The e-Qute 02 is longer in size, resulting in a slightly extended wheelbase that translates into a more spacious cabin. While the Comet EV attempts to counter this with a taller stance, the added interior length of the e-Qute 02 feels more practical and appealing for everyday use.

Moreover, in terms of battery capacity, the e-Qute 02 clearly has the upper hand. It features a 28.08 kWh battery pack, compared to the 17.3 kWh unit in the Comet EV. The e-Qute also rides on larger 15-inch wheels, while the Comet EV sticks to smaller 12-inch ones. This difference may affect the driving range slightly in favor of the Comet or may nullify the larger battery unit advantage of e-Qute 02. So, the comparison is somewhat balanced in this section.

One area of concern, though, is battery chemistry. The Comet EV uses a Lithium-ion battery, which offers higher energy density, while the e-Qute opts for a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) unit. Although LFP batteries have lower energy density, they are inherently safer. In high-end EVs, NMC batteries come with robust safety systems, but in entry-level models, such concerns carry more weight. That said, there have been no reports of safety issues in either model, so buyers need not worry unduly.

When it comes to features, the e-Qute 02 continues to impress. It offers a 4-speaker audio system, 360-Degree Imagery, and a Type-C charging port, which are some amenities that the Comet EV does not provide.

So, even though the e-Qute 02 claims a slightly higher price than the Comet EV’s top variant, the overall value it delivers helps explain why Kaiyi’s e-Qute series has overtaken the Comet EV to become the best-selling name in the mini EV segment.
