Huawei Y8s Goes Official: The “Dual” Camera Madness!

It’s been a while since a new device joined the Huawei army. With the ongoing lockdown, it’s been really tough for companies to introduce new devices to the market. However, Huawei has managed to get at least one device out on the market despite the fear of being rejected completely.

The rumors of a new member joining the entry-level Y-series from Huawei have been going around for quite a while now. The official listing of the mint Y8s on the company’s official website in Jordan has now confirmed almost all of the “rumored” specifications.

Even though there are no details on the availability or pricing, the site reveals quite a lot about the device itself. The phone is expected to launch in India after a short while, so chances are that it will sprung up in Nepal as well. Here’s what we were able to capture from all the official revelations of the device.

Huawei Y8s Overview: The “Dual” Camera Madness!

The Y8s is based on the usual mid-range framework except for a quirky exception. The Y8s features a dual selfie camera layout that obviously covers a relatively larger area on the top. On the rear, the polycarbonate surface encompasses a vertical camera bump towards the top right and a physical fingerprint scanner on the center.

Moving on, the display is based on an IPS LCD Panel spread over a 6.5” canvas. The resolution tops out at 1080p, the aspect ratio is maintained at 19.5:9 with the screen-to-body ratio at 82.8%. Under the hood, the Y8s features the same old Octa-Core Kirin 710 processor, which is a disappointment frankly. Paired alongside a 4GB RAM and 64/128GB internal, it’s pretty much average-ish.

Now, the rear camera does some improvement made to it. There’s a dual-camera module now comprising of a primary 48MP shooter and a 2MP depth snapper. Coincidentally, there’s a dual-camera module on the front as well but it’s not as powerful. The 8MP+2MP combination still feels rather promising though.

Huawei Y8s Key Specifications

  • Display: IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 6.5 inches (~82.8% screen-to-body ratio)
  • Resolution: 1080 x 2340 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio (~396 ppi density)
  • Chipset: HiSilicon Kirin 710 (12 nm)
  • CPU: Octa-core (4×2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4×1.7 GHz Cortex-A53)
  • GPU: Mali-G51 MP4
  • OS: Android 9.0 (Pie), EMUI 9.1, no Google Play Services
  • Internals: 64GB 4GB RAM, 128GB 4GB RAM
  • Rear camera: Dual – 48 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.0″, 0.8µm, PDAF and 2 MP, f/2.4, (depth)
  • Front Camera: Dual – 8 MP, f/2.0, (wide) and 2 MP, f/2.4, (depth)
  • Battery: 4,000 mAh; standard 10W Charging

The battery department is quite impressive but that too has an oddity. The 4000mAh battery embedded inside is surely enough to power the device throughout the day. But the 10W standard charger is a nightmare when juicing up the battery. Oh, and one other thing, there’s no support for USB Type C meaning you’re still stuck with MicroUSB.

Huawei Y8s Initial Impressions, Price, Availability

Well, that pretty much rounds up all the specifications of the device. Analyzing the specifications and previous patterns of the Y-series, we can at least say that this is a low-end midrange. The machine has good hardware, but it still feels just plain vanilla.

There’re two specific reasons for that. First and foremost is that the processor that they’re using is pretty old and is in dire need of replacement. Since it looks like the device does not support GMS, replacing the processor would have certainly made this device a little more appealing. Secondly, the 10W charging and MicroUSB is just not entirely acceptable to me.

Now, as I mentioned earlier, the phone is expected to arrive in India after some time. Probably, after that it’ll be setting its courses to Nepal. About the pricing, no revelations have been made at all. So, we can say nothing about that for the time being.

Still, the details are expected to follow up in a short while. Till then, stay around for further information on the device. And while you’re at it, do let us know your thoughts on the device.
