The A5 Pro didn’t make much of an impact in the Nepali market, so the question now is: can the standard A5 turn things around?

The OPPO A5, launched in 2025, is actually the second phone to carry that name. OPPO had already released an OPPO A5 back in 2020, so it’s safe to say the company really needs to rethink its naming strategy.

Naming confusion aside, the new A5 is essentially a toned-down version of the A5 Pro. It features the same processor, the same display, and even comes with a larger battery. So what exactly did OPPO remove—besides the “Pro” from the name?

Let’s dive and find out.

OPPO A5 Overview

Design

To be honest, there’s nothing particularly striking about the A5’s design; it blends right into the sea of smartphones in this price range.

It comes with a rectangular camera module housing a dual-camera setup and a ring-shaped LED flash. But if history is anything to go by, like with the OPPO A5 Pro, it’s likely just a single LED light.

The phone features a plastic body with flat frames, though OPPO markets it as having a “high-strength alloy frame” paired with reinforced glass. It even carries a Military-Grade Shock Resistance certification, so it should be able to survive a few accidental drops.

The A5 also boasts an IP65 rating. That’s a noticeable downgrade from the A5 Pro, which impressed with its multiple ingress ratings, IP66, IP68, and IP69. Clearly, the non-Pro version has been trimmed down in that department.

As for colors, it’s available in Mist White and Aurora Green. There’s also a Midnight Purple variant, but sadly, that one won’t be making it to our market.

Display

On the front, the OPPO A5 features a 6.67-inch IPS LCD display with a noticeable chin. It offers an HD+ resolution (720 x 1604 pixels) and a 90Hz refresh rate. The brightness peaks at 1000 nits in High Brightness Mode (HBM), with a typical brightness of 850 nits.

Judging by the specs, it seems OPPO has reused the exact same panel from the A5 Pro. It’s not unusual for brands to trickle down hardware to sibling models, and in this case, we’re at least glad they didn’t downgrade it further, especially considering how underwhelming the A5 Pro’s display already was.

That said, even at this price point, the display falls short. Competing phones like the Moto G35, HMD Crest, and Redmi 13 offer either higher resolution, smoother refresh rates, or even OLED panels—all while costing less than the A5. So, it’s hard to recommend the OPPO A5 based on its display alone.

Hardware and OS

The OPPO A5, like its Pro sibling, is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 1 processor.

Now, the name might sound promising thanks to the “Gen” branding that mimics Qualcomm’s newer chips, but don’t be fooled. The Snapdragon 6s Gen 1 is actually just a rebranded Snapdragon 662, a chipset that’s been around for years.

At its current price, the A5 offers poor value, especially when compared to options like the Infinix Note 50X 5G+, which features a much faster Dimensity 7300 processor while costing less.

Surprisingly, the A5 runs on the latest Android 15, layered with ColorOS 15. While it’s good to see the newest software out of the box, pairing it with such an old processor could lead to sluggish performance. And based on our experience with the A5 Pro, you can probably expect plenty of bloatware and system ads here too.

The phone comes with 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage, along with a dedicated microSD card slot. However, OPPO hasn’t specified the maximum expandable storage limit.

Camera and AI

The OPPO A5 features a 50MP main camera paired with a 5MP monochrome sensor. On the front, there’s a 5MP selfie camera housed in a punch-hole cutout. Both the front and rear cameras are capable of recording 1080p videos at 30fps.

OPPO has packed in several AI-powered features to enhance the camera experience. These include AI Eraser, which removes unwanted objects from the background; AI Clarity Enhancer, designed to sharpen blurry photos; and AI Smart Image Matting, which lets you cut out subjects from an image for easy editing or background replacement.

Battery

The OPPO A5 packs a massive 6,000mAh battery, charged via a USB-C port with support for 45W SuperVOOC fast charging.

According to OPPO, the fast charging tech can power the device up to 30% in just 19 minutes and hit 50% in around 36 minutes.

OPPO A5 Price in Nepal and Availability

The OPPO A5 price in Nepal is Rs. 22,999 for the 6GB/128GB variant. As part of a special launch offer, OPPO is providing 2 years of extended warranty for users who purchase the OPPO A5 before August 10, 2025. It’s a nice bonus that adds extra peace of mind for early buyers.

Customers can also get the OPPO A5 on 0% EMI with a 40% down payment, and flexible 12-month installment options.

Just like the OPPO A5 Pro, the OPPO A5 fails to stick the landing, except this time, it doesn’t even come close. With its 6-year-old Snapdragon 6s Gen 1 chipset, an underwhelming 90Hz HD+ display, and a subpar camera setup, the A5 falls behind the competition in nearly every aspect, while still costing more.

The only real highlight here is the massive 6,000mAh battery. But even that feels like a poor trade-off when the rest of the specs lag so far behind.

At least the A5 Pro had some redeeming qualities—it was tough, sturdy, and came with excellent ingress protection. Unfortunately, the standard A5 doesn’t even deliver on that front.
