Design

The Samsung QA65QN90D boasts a simple yet premium design. Thin bezels on all four sides, a metal border, and a centrally mounted stand contribute to its minimalist elegance, making it a great addition to any modern living space.

Adding to its aesthetic appeal, the central stand is made of metal and requires minimal space, ensuring you don’t need a large table to accommodate the TV. However, the compact stand design comes with a slight drawback, as it causes noticeable wobbling when the TV is pushed.

The rear of the TV features a plastic body with a brushed aluminum finish, giving it the appearance of metal. While the TV feels solidly built overall, the back panel exhibits significant flex.

Overall, the QN90D feels well built and sturdy.

Notably, the TV includes 4x HDMI 2.1 ports, with HDMI 3 supporting eARC for enhanced audio connectivity. Above the HDMI ports, you’ll find an optical input and 2x USB 2.0 ports, while the LAN port is positioned below the HDMI ports, followed by EX-Link and an antenna input.

Outstanding Screen Quality

  • VA panel
  • Mini LEDs
  • Semi-gloss
  • HDR10+
  • 100% color volume

The Samsung QA65QN90D is a Neo QLED TV equipped with a VA panel, representing Samsung’s best non-OLED offering. It stands well above traditional LED and QLED TVs in terms of picture quality.

Neo QLED panels utilize Mini LED backlighting, where the LEDs are 1/40th the size of regular LEDs. This allows for significantly improved picture quality compared to standard QLED TVs. Likewise, the VA (Vertical Alignment) panel is designed to deliver better contrast than IPS panels. However, the QN90D’s native contrast ratio is only average.

This is where Samsung’s 4K Quantum Matrix Technology makes a difference. By precisely controlling the Mini LEDs, this technology achieves black levels that can rival OLED TVs. The QN90D has great black levels considering it is not an OLED TV. The mini LEDs combined with effective local dimming help the QN90D deliver deep blacks in dark rooms and maintain those blacks even when bright highlights appear on the screen.

Color, HDR & Brightness

The QA65QN90D has a very good color gamut with excellent DCI-P3 color space. Most colors look vibrant and saturated but some colors are a bit undersaturated.

This TV provides amazing HDR experience.

The HDR performance is equally praiseworthy. The TV delivers highlights that stand out vividly during darker scenes, creating a striking balance of brightness and contrast. Its HDR brightness is more than sufficient for most viewing environments, and when combined with its fantastic contrast levels, the QN90D provides a truly impactful HDR viewing experience.

Samsung QN90D Neo QLED TV Review

The QN90D excels in HDR performance with the help of HDR10+ and Neo Quantum HDR+ technology. These features provide vivid colors in 4K resolution and an enjoyable HDR experience. Even a normal person will be able to differentiate between HDR content and non-HDR content on this TV.

Adding to its strengths is the Auto HDR Remastering feature which uses AI to enhance SDR content. With this feature, the QN90D does a very good job of brightening highlights, boosting colors, and upscaling the image quality. I noticed this working quite well when I was watching 1080p non-HDR TV shows on Netflix. The upscaling felt natural without oversharpening and the color boost was just right.

Local Dimming

The TV also features a local dimming function, which divides the screen into various lighting zones. Each zone adjusts its brightness according to the content being displayed, enhancing contrast and preventing light bleed. For example:

The Samsung QN90D’s local dimming is highly effective, delivering outstanding contrast and black levels that rival OLEDs, especially in dark viewing environments.

If the right side of the screen needs to display black while the left side shows white, the lighting zones on the right will dim to their minimum intensity while the zones on the left will brighten to their maximum intensity. When displaying an all-black image, all lighting zones will dim to their minimum intensity, ensuring deep, uniform blacks.

Viewing Angle

The QN90D offers a decent viewing angle for a VA panel. The image remains consistent and maintains good quality when viewed from a slight angle. However, as you move further off-center, you may notice color shifting and a slight washout in the image.

While not ideal for wide seating arrangements, the viewing angle is an improvement over many other VA panel TVs.

4K AI Upscaling

  • NQ4 AI Gen 2
  • AI Upscaling

The 4K AI Upscaling feature on the QN90D excels at enhancing low-resolution content, delivering clear details and well-processed sharpness. Whether watching older shows or non-4K content, the upscaling seems to be doing a good job of sharpening the content without going overboard.

This TV is powered by the NQ4 AI Gen 2 processor, featuring a 4x faster NPU and 20 AI neural networks. The processor plays a pivotal role in various features, from image processing and upscaling to enabling advanced AI functionalities like the AI Customization Mode.

In AI Customization Mode, the TV automatically adjusts settings based on the nature of the content. One notable observation in this mode is the less saturated colors, which results in accurate and natural color representation. This mode is highly recommended for viewers who prefer watching content with precise color accuracy.

Response Time & Gaming

Motion Xcelerator

The Samsung QA65QN90D offers excellent response time, minimizing blur behind fast-moving objects. This is particularly advantageous for watching fast-paced content like sports and gaming.

Gaming on the QN90D is a standout experience, thanks to features like Motion Xcelerator, which allows the TV to reach up to 144Hz refresh rate. Playing games in 4K at 144Hz is a treat, with smooth visuals and fluid motion. The TV also supports VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), effectively reducing screen tearing during gaming sessions.

The combination of excellent response time and advanced gaming features makes the QN90D a fantastic choice for gamers.

I tested games like Red Dead Redemption and F1 22 using a laptop connected to the QN90D as a monitor. During gameplay, there were no issues such as screen tearing, and the input lag was incredibly low, ensuring responsive controls.

Sound Quality

  • 20W Speaker
  • Q-Symphony
  • Adaptive Sound

Sound Quality

The Samsung QN90D is equipped with a 60W speaker system featuring a 4.2.2 channel configuration enhanced by Dolby Atmos. The sound quality is impressive and well-balanced, with clear dialogues in movies and minimal distortion at 60-80% volume.

However, when the volume exceeds 80%, slight distortion becomes noticeable, which could be an issue for users who frequently prefer high-volume playback.

Samsung QN90D delivers a robust and well-rounded sound system that complements its premium picture quality.

For users who want an even richer sound experience, the QN90D supports the Q-Symphony feature. This allows the TV’s built-in speakers and a compatible Samsung soundbar to work together seamlessly, delivering a more immersive and synchronized audio experience.

The TV also comes with Adaptive Sound Pro, which automatically adjusts the audio output according to the environment and surroundings, ensuring an optimized listening experience. Additionally, the Active Amplifier Pro feature enhances dialogue clarity, making it easier to follow conversations in movies or shows, even in noisy environments.

Smart Features & Remote

  • Smart Tizen OS
  • Solar Cell Remote

Tizen OS

The remote control of the Samsung QN90D is sleek, and compact, and comes with a unique solar charging feature, reducing the need for frequent battery replacements. It also includes a Type-C port for manual charging, ensuring uninterrupted usability.

The remote has dedicated buttons for Netflix, Prime Video, and a web browser, making it easy to access popular apps. However, the lack of programmable buttons feels like a missed opportunity for customization.

The remote’s voice control button provides access to Bixby and Alexa, allowing users to perform tasks like changing settings, switching inputs, and answering basic queries via voice commands.

The TV runs on Samsung’s Tizen OS, known for its intuitive interface. The home screen features preview windows for popular apps like Netflix, Prime Video, and YouTube, ensuring a smooth and user-friendly experience.

The app selection is pretty good with most of the streaming services available except Disney+ and Apple TV. Moving on you can also use the “Workspace” feature to connect your Windows PC or Mac to mirror the screen. I tried using this feature and it ran flawlessly.
