Everybody seems to need a laptop nowadays. With more people than ever working from home, the use of laptops has never been higher. But how do you know if you have the right tools or computer for what you really want to achieve?
What do you need it for?
Before spending any money, it is essential to work out what your specific needs are. It is pointless to fork out hundreds of pounds on a bespoke gaming computer when you only really need it for Word and Excel. A low-end model would probably be sufficient and more cost-effective, providing you have a powerful enough processor to contend with long periods of use. Battery life is also essential as Zoom meetings can drain it rapidly, so you want to ensure that you can pick one up with a minimum of eight or nine hours on it.
You will need to ensure that you have a decent-sized screen as well, mainly to reduce the likelihood of strain on your eyes. Most companies would recommend a screen size of between 12.5 to 14 inches for a decent screen, especially when it comes to portability. The last thing you want is something unwieldy to lug around if you get called into the office, so make sure you pick something that gives you that flexibility.
Test your specs
There is no harm in using your laptop for a little bit of R&R. To take a break from work, you could install a few gaming apps to ensure that you can give yourself that reset. If you are office-bound, then you can always pop online and have a little look at a couple of gambling sites. They can provide that little adrenaline rush that you need to get through the day and with a bit of legal online poker, there is very little that can go wrong. You can use it to test out the sharpness of your screen and even the strength of the processor. As far as the poker goes, that can provide the perfect respite from a hard day working.
Safeguard against memory loss
You also need to consider what environment you are likely to be working in and how much space. For instance, if you are likely to be at a desk then you may want a slightly bulkier laptop. This makes it easier to adapt to the screen and as you won’t be holding it most of the time, the desk can take the strain. A large hard-drive is important, too, so that you can make sure you always have enough space for your work and nothing has to be sacrificed to make room.
The average laptop tends to come with 250GB of memory, while some range models have up to 500GB, both of which are more than sufficient as a standard work laptop. However, if you have a lot of data-heavy files, it might be worth investing in a 1TB hard-drive, or even an external one, just so you can keep hold of essential files, especially as a safeguard against hard-drive errors.
