OPPO A5x Price Hiked in Nepal, But It Remains a Strong Budget Pick

Among all the phones in the OPPO A5 series that launched in Nepal, I regarded the OPPO A5x as the best value-for-money option. Sadly, the A5x is now more expensive. Sure, its value has taken a hit, but is it still worth recommending?

For me, both the OPPO A5 Pro and the A5 got lost in the sea of generic smartphones. Neither device managed to stand out, plagued by poor SoC choices, underwhelming cameras, half-decent performance, and most importantly, questionable pricing.

On paper, the specs of the A5x closely mirror its fallen predecessors, giving it a shaky head start, and the price hike does not help.

But looking at current entry-level smartphone pricing, the A5x still seems appealing. Let’s take a closer look at the OPPO A5x and find out if it’s true.

OPPO A5x Overview

Design

It looks like OPPO is reusing the same frame from the A5 for the A5x, as both phones share the same dimensions and weight.

The A5x also carries over the IP65 water and dust resistance, along with military-grade certification, just like the A5.

In terms of design, the only noticeable change is at the back. The camera module is now a squaricle shape, similar to the sturdy A5 Pro but without any bump. This area houses what appear to be two camera lenses, but one is actually just an IR blaster. So essentially, there’s only a single functional camera, which isn’t unusual for a budget device.

The squaricle section also gets a different texture compared to the rest of the brushed plastic back, giving it a subtle design contrast.

Display

On the front, the OPPO A5x features a 6.67-inch IPS LCD display with a noticeable chin. While the thick chin can be excused on a budget phone, what’s harder to overlook is the HD+ resolution (720 × 1604 pixels).

For the cheaper variant of the A5x, this resolution feels acceptable for the price. But for the remaining models, it comes off as underwhelming, especially when competitors like the HMD Crest are offering an OLED FHD+ display in the same segment.

Beyond resolution, the display supports a 90Hz refresh rate and reaches 1000 nits of brightness in High Brightness Mode (HBM), with a typical brightness of 850 nits.

From the looks of it, OPPO has reused the same panel from the A5 Pro and the A5. And while reusing hardware isn’t unusual in this price range, at least OPPO hasn’t downgraded it further, though that’s faint praise considering how underwhelming the A5 Pro’s display already was.

Hardware and OS

The OPPO A5x, like its sibling, is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 1 processor.

Don’t let the “Gen” branding fool you; the 6s “4G” Gen 1 is essentially a rebranded Snapdragon 662, a chip that has been around for nearly five years.

At its current price, only the 4/64GB variant could be considered a decent value for money. Even that claim is easily challenged by phones like the Moto G05 and the Redmi A5, which offer better performance at a lower cost. The higher 4/128GB and 6/128GB variants are harder to justify given the aging processor.

The A5x runs Android 15 with ColorOS 15 layered on top. Pairing such an old processor with the latest Android could lead to sluggish performance. And based on our experience with the A5 and A5 Pro, you can also expect bloatware and system ads.

Storage comes in either 64GB or 128GB of UFS 2.1, along with a dedicated microSD card slot, though the maximum supported capacity is not specified.

Camera and AI

The camera setup is fairly mediocre as well, featuring a 32MP main camera paired with an IR blaster. OPPO has even removed the 2MP depth sensor that was present on the A5. But, considering that the A5x is a smaller, budget-oriented sibling of the A5, this is somewhat expected.

On the front, there’s a 5MP punch-hole camera for selfies. Both the front and rear cameras can record video at 1080p at 30FPS.

OPPO has added several AI-powered features to enhance the photography experience. These include AI Eraser, which removes unwanted objects from the background; AI Clarity Enhancer, designed to sharpen slightly blurry photos; and AI Smart Image Matting, which allows you to cut out subjects for easy editing or background replacement.

Battery

The phone packs a massive 6,000mAh battery, charged via a USB-C port with support for 45W SuperVOOC fast charging.

According to OPPO, the fast charging tech can power the device up to 30% in just 19 minutes and hit 50% in around 36 minutes.

OPPO A5x Price in Nepal and Availability

The OPPO A5x price in Nepal is Rs. 14,999, Rs. 17,999, and Rs. 19,999 for the 4/64GB, 4/128GB, and 6GB/128GB variants.

As part of a special launch offer, OPPO is providing 2 years of extended warranty for users who purchase the A5x before August 31, 2025.

With each new launch in the OPPO A5 series, my expectations have been steadily declining. Take the OPPO A5 Pro, for instance. It costs north of Rs. 30,000 yet only offers entry-level specs. Even some budget devices offer better value.

With the price hike, I’m glad to say the OPPO A5x still feels reasonably priced. I mean, you’re getting a phone with a 6,000mAh battery, and the only other phone to offer a battery this large is the Redmi A7 Pro, which costs Rs. 1,000 more. Plus you are also getting 4GB RAM.

So even after the price hike, the OPPO A5x still stands out as one of the better value-for-money options in its segment.
