Apple’s First Foldable Phone, iPhone Duo is Finally Here

Apple has launched its first foldable, the iPhone Duo, at the Surprise and Shine event held on September 9, 2026. It is also the first major product launch under Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus.

But despite the “surprise” in the event’s name, there was very little that was surprising about the event itself. We all knew Apple’s foldable was coming, didn’t we? But what we didn’t know was how good it was going to be.

After all, Apple waited nearly seven years to enter a market where others had already gone through several generations of foldables. That delay may have worked in Apple’s favor, though, giving it plenty of time to learn from the competition.

And, at first glance, the Duo looks like a well-refined first attempt. Apple hasn’t necessarily reinvented the foldable, but it seems to have taken what others have learned and polished the formula.

So, what exactly has Apple brought to the table with the iPhone Duo? Let’s take a closer look.

Apple’s iPhone Duo is not just its first foldable; it is also the most expensive iPhone ever. At around INR 3 lakh, you could almost land a car at that price!

But beyond the eye-watering price tag, what exactly has Apple brought to the foldable game? Let’s take a closer look.

iPhone Duo Overview

Apple has adopted a wider and shorter form factor for the Duo, much like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8. This form factor is often described as passport-sized or book-style. And the Duo certainly has that passport-like look, with those smooth, curved edges.

Apple isn’t chasing a thinner body, but it’s going for a more robust build. The Duo is IP68-rated, with Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold being the only other foldable to boast the same rating. As a result, it measures 5.2mm thick when unfolded, compared to 4.5mm for the Galaxy Z Fold 8. It’s also on the heavier side, weighing in at 254 grams.

Apple has given the Duo a Grade 5 titanium frame, strengthened with internal ceramic fiber. Likewise, the hinge cover is 3D-printed using 100% recycled titanium. The hinge itself consists of more than 100 precision components, while custom carbon-fiber support plates help keep the display flat and secure when opened or closed. Similarly, the rear panel is protected by Ceramic Shield, while the cover display uses Ceramic Shield 2.

The iPhone Duo comes in two colors: Star White and Night Sky.

Moving on to the display, the Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display that opens up to a 7.6-inch panel, the largest display ever on an iPhone. Both are Super Retina XDR OLED panels with ProMotion up to 120Hz, Dolby Vision, and HDR.

Both displays also share the same aspect ratio and offer up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness. Apple Pencil support is also coming later this year.

However, the inner display is where things get interesting. It uses 10 ultrathin layers, along with a custom nano-texture finish that reduces glare and minimizes the visibility of the crease. The multilayer display stack also uses custom adhesives that allow the layers to glide over each other as the phone folds, helping reduce stress on the display.

And honestly, this is the part of the iPhone Duo I’m most interested in experiencing firsthand.

Next, Apple has also upgraded the chipset, moving from a 4nm process to a 2nm chip with the new A20 Pro. It features a dual 16-core Neural Engine and is claimed to be up to 20% faster, with up to 50% more memory bandwidth.

In terms of memory, the Duo comes with 12GB of RAM and is available with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage options. And the chipset isn’t the only upgrade. To support the enhanced performance, Apple has also included a vapor chamber that is three times larger than the one on the iPhone 17 series.

But while Apple has gone all-in on performance, there are a few areas where you have to make some compromises. And one of them is the cameras.

The iPhone Duo has a dual rear camera setup, with a main camera and an ultrawide, and both use 48MP sensors. However, these aren’t the same sensors you’ll find on the new iPhone 18 Pro. Instead, they are similar to the ones used on last year’s iPhone 17 series.

Also, what’s up with the selfie camera being positioned on the edge of the cover screen? And if you can’t see a camera on the inner display, that’s because it’s an under-display camera.

The cover display gets a 12MP selfie camera with Apple’s Center Stage. However, it is a downgrade from the 18MP sensor on the regular iPhone 18 series. You also don’t get Face ID this time around, as the Duo goes back to Touch ID, which makes more sense for a foldable design.

The rear camera also gets some foldable-specific features, including the option to take a FaceTime call on both sides of the phone at once, which could be useful in a group setting.

Likewise, the Smart Take feature can detect when everyone is ready with their pose and automatically take the picture. Duo Preview lets the subject see a live preview on the outer display, so they can adjust their pose before the shot.

And, for the first time on a foldable, there’s a feature called Kid Cue, which displays playful animations on the outer display to draw a child’s attention toward the camera lens.

If you don’t know, Apple doesn’t really like to openly disclose the battery capacity of its iPhones. Instead, the company focuses on real-world usage figures. Apple claims that the Duo’s dual-cell battery can deliver up to 24 hours of regular use, or up to 31 hours of video playback on the larger inner display.

In terms of charging, it can reach up to 50% in around 20 minutes with 60W fast wired charging and also supports 25W MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging.

Where the Duo really takes things up a notch is with the software. Apple has paired the hardware with iOS 27, designed to make the most of the foldable form factor and bring together the best of both the iPhone and iPad experience. So, it doesn’t feel like just another iPhone that happens to fold.

First and foremost, the Lock Screen controls, Home Screen Dock, and app navigation have now moved to the side, following a common approach seen on other foldable phones. The status bar has also been minimized into a small, expandable circle that shows Wi-Fi, signal strength, and other information.

Likewise, the Dynamic Island has been redesigned to fit vertically along the side of both the outer and inner displays. It also features a reactive animation when you fold the phone, with the interface automatically orienting itself in any direction. Duo users can also open two apps side by side using Split View, a first for the iPhone.

Apple also says Siri is getting more powerful, with an entirely new version of the assistant set to roll out with iOS 27.

It feels like Apple sat out of the foldable phone space just so it could learn from everyone else and make a clean sweep with its own version. The iPhone Duo doesn’t feel like just another phone that happens to fold. Instead, it actually gives the foldable form factor a purpose with clever hardware integration and software features.

One of the most debated aspects of foldable phones has always been the crease, and Apple seems to have done one of the best jobs yet at making it less visible. On top of that, iOS has been specifically optimized for the Duo, bringing in several foldable-specific features that make better use of the larger display.

Overall, the iPhone Duo feels like a polished first-generation foldable. Apple hasn’t reinvented the wheel, but it has taken what other manufacturers have learned over the years and refined the formula in its own way.
