GoPro Hero 12 Black Overview

Design

GoPro this year too has not made any drastic changes to its action camera. The GoPro Hero 12 Black looks the same as the previous GoPro cameras.

The noticeable design change is that the camera body has a speckled design with blue on black. Additionally, if you look at the bottom, you will find that the Hero 12 Black now features a quarter 12 (1/4-20) mounting thread between the two folding fingers, allowing the camera to be attached to standard tripod mounts.

Other than the blue text written “12 Black” on the right, the rest of the design is the same with the same dual LCD displays, a speaker behind the folding fingers on the bottom side. On the left side, there is a door for accessing the battery, SD card, and USB-C port, while the right side accommodates a mode button and a microphone port.

Furthermore, this action camera boasts a waterproof rating of up to 10 meters (33 feet) without the need for any additional housing.

Camera

The camera sensor on the GoPro Hero 12 Black is the same as last year. It is a 1/1.9 inches 8:7 camera sensor that can be cropped to vertical 9:16, widescreen 16:9, traditional 4:3, or full frame 8:7 aspect ratios.

The 8:7 aspect ratio is now available across all video resolutions as well as TimeWarp, Time Lapse, Night Lapse, and all Night Effects modes. The camera can take 27MP photos.

The processor used is the GP2 chip which GoPro has been using since 2021. The Hero 12 also can shoot up to 5.3K video at 60 frames per second (fps), 2.7K video at 240 fps, and 4K video at 120 fps.

Camera Features

A new feature on the Hero 12 Black is the ability to shoot HDR video. The HDR video can be shot at 5.3K30 and 4K60.

GoPro says the already great video stabilization of the Hero 11 Black is further improved on the Hero 12 Black with HyperSmooth 6.0, which features next-generation AutoBoost.

HyperSmooth 6.0 also enables horizon-leveling even with full 360° camera rotation in the Linear + Horizon Lock digital lens or in all lens settings when using the Max Lens Mod 2.0 accessory.

Available separately, the Max Lens Mod 2.0 accessory enables a 177° field of view at 4K resolution at 60 frames per second.

Users can now record audio straight to the HERO 12 Black from Bluetooth devices, such as Apple AirPods, earbuds, headphones, and microphones — great for vlogging, scene narration, and issuing voice commands to control your HERO 12 Black from a distance.

The Hero 12 Black now allows you to take vertical video even when the camera is mounted horizontally with the new vertical capture mode. It makes it easier to share straight to TikTok or YouTube Shorts.

There is also a new feature for taking photos called Interval Photo. It enables photo capture at fixed intervals, from every 0.5 seconds all the way up to every 120 seconds. Additionally, there are new Night Effects presets for timelapse, including star trails, light painting, and vehicle light trails.

For professionals, the Hero 12 Black now features a 10-bit GP-Log profile for video with available LUTs for more control and color grading in post-production.

Moreover, for easier synchronization of multiple cameras, the Hero 12 Black features a new Timecode Sync. It syncs an unlimited number of HERO 12 Black cameras for easy multi-camera editing with Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, and other leading editing apps.

Additionally, it has simplified camera controls with updated “easy controls” for normal users and streamlined “pro controls” for advanced users.

Disappointingly, the GPS is missing on the GoPro Hero 12 Black.

Battery

Like the Hero 11 Black, the GoPro Hero 12 Black also comes with a 1720mAh Lithium-Ion Enduro battery. But GoPro claims the new power management system dramatically improves the battery life delivering up to 2x longer runtimes.

GoPro claims more efficient processing allows the Hero 12 Black to shoot up to 70 minutes at 5.3K60, over 95 minutes at 5.3K30, and over 155 minutes at 1080p30, all with HyperSmooth 6.0 video stabilization.
