Apple Mac Studio M2 Overview

Design

Apple has embraced the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” ideology and hasn’t really made any changes to the design of the Mac Studio M2. The Mac Studio M2 has the same chassis as the Mac Studio M1 with more performance under the hood. Even the weight has remained unchanged with the Max and Ultra chips.

It has a footprint of 7.7 square inches and Apple has claimed that the Mac Studio is able to stay whisper quiet so as to not interfere with workflow. Moving on to ports, the Mac Studio M2 has no changes in the port selection or performance.

The Mac Studio M2 features the same four or six (depending upon the chip model) Thunderbolt 4 ports along with two USB-A ports, HDMI, Ethernet, and a 3.5mm headphone jack at the back.

As it’s aimed at professionals, the Studio M2 features an SDXC card slot (UHS-II) and two more USB-C ports at the front.

Hardware

The Mac Studio M2 is powered by either the M2 Max or the M2 Ultra chip. The M2 Ultra is actually just two M2 Max fused together in what Apple calls “UltraFusion”. This allows for the chip to have a massive 2.5TB/s low-latency interprocessor bandwidth.

The M2 Max has a 12-core CPU with 8 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores. It features a 16-core Neural Engine and is configurable up to a 38-core GPU. Compared to the M1 Max with a 10-core CPU and up to 32-core GPU, other aspects such as the 16-core Neural Engine and 400GB/s memory bandwidth have remained the same.

The M2 Ultra has a 24-core CPU with 16 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores. It features a 32-core Neural Engine and is configurable up to a 76-core GPU. Here as well, the difference from the M1 Ultra is with the 20-core CPU and up to 64-core GPU. The 32-core Neural Engine and 800GB/s memory bandwidth have remained the same.

With over 134 billion transistors in the M2 Ultra, Apple claims it is the most powerful chip ever in a personal computer. The M2 Ultra can be configured with up to 192GB of unified memory and 8TB of storage. The M2 Max can be configured with up to 96GB of unified memory and 8TB of storage.

Connectivity and OS

The Mac Studio M2 comes with Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.3, and 10Gb Ethernet port. The Ethernet port has support for 1Gb, 2.5Gb, 5Gb, and 10Gb Ethernet using an RJ-45 connector.

The HDMI port has support for one display with up to 8K resolution at 60Hz or 4K resolution at 240Hz. The OS with the Studio M2 is Apple’s macOS Ventura.
