Tesla has a great influence on putting electric vehicles on the map! Just a few decades ago, EVs were often considered a joke, with poor range and terrible performance.
However, things have changed quite dramatically. Jump back to the present day, people prefer EVs as a reliable and greener alternative to a traditional gas-guzzler.
And now, Tesla is expected to showcase its long-rumored “million-mile” battery at the much-anticipated Battery Day event.
What’s a ‘million-mile’ Battery?
Well, it is pretty self-explanatory.
Tesla’s new battery technology is designed to last for 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometers) of operations. It is jointly developed with Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) in China.
Elon Musk, CEO and Co-Founder of Tesla, had discussed the new battery at Tesla’s 2019 Autonomy Day event.
“The new battery pack that is probably going to production next year is designed explicitly for 1 million miles of operation.”, Musk said at the 2019 event.
Advantage Over Traditional Batteries
If you didn’t know, any rechargeable battery will lose its capacity with everyday use. Whether it’s your phone, your laptop, or anyone of your battery-powered appliances, the battery will degrade over time.
However, there have been improvements over the last decade. A standard Li-Ion battery can already hold more charge without any drastic loss in capacity.
Interestingly, Tesla’s new “million-mile” battery will take things a step further.
The new battery-technology will use low-cobalt and cobalt-free chemistries. Moreover, it will also retain its maximum useable capacity for a longer period.
Right now, a typical battery starts to degrade in low 1,000s of cycles. However, a ‘million-mile’ battery will theoretically degrade around 4,000s of cycles.
In turn, it will reduce its overall cost, making EVs more affordable than ever!

Any Reveal Date?
Okay, everything about Tesla’s new battery sounds awesome! So, when will we get to see it?
That’s a tricky question. According to several reports, Tesla had planned to unveil the technology in April. However, due to the on-going COVID-19 situation, the plans were postponed. So, the event is expected to be held in late-2020 or early-2021.
As of this writing, there are reports to bring technology-first to China when it is first unveiled.
In any case, it is a win for the future of EVs!
