The odd-even rule for vehicles will be implemented in Kathmandu valley from 29th August to 31st August. The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division has made this rule to accommodate the travel of the VIP foreign guests and representatives of the fourth Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation summit. This measure is taken to make their mobility inside the city safe and organized. The BIMSTEC will be held on 30th August and 31st August.
According to the rule, vehicles with number plates ending in odd numbers will be allowed to run on 29th and 31st of August, and those with number plates ending in even numbers will be allowed to run on 30th August. The traffic police will be responsible for detaining any vehicles not following the rule.
According to MTPD, there are around 1.1 million vehicles operating on the city streets on a daily basis. The odd-even rule is expected to reduce the traffic by half during the three days in which the rule will be implemented.
SSP Basant Kumar Pant has informed that this rule will be applied for both public and private vehicles, and both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Although, the rule will not be implemented on emergency vehicles of the hospitals, like an ambulance, and a hearse.
