All migrant workers seeking work permit now need to register using an eye scan technology.
The Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE), under the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) started the process from last week to make the work permit application more reliable.
Talking on this topic, Mohan Adhikari, DoFE spokesperson said, “This technology has been used for the first time in registering migrant workers. It will help speed up the registration process.”
The system has an estimated cost of Rs 2 million. It has a camera in the registration section to take the picture of the applicant. The picture taken is stored as the id for future identifications as well.
Adhikari added, “We used to have problems with the previous system while reading thumb print of applicants. A large number of applicants, mostly working as labour, had their thumb prints erased or blurred due to various reasons including the nature of their work.” With this technology, that would no longer be a problem.
Other major problem was that nearly 10% of applicant’s data during orientation training could not be accessed on time during the departure of the applicant at the the DoFE and the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA). With the new system, the problem is also solved as now the entire applicants data is stored in the system.
