GoPro launched the update to its famed lineup of Hero action cams internationally on 20th September. This year the cameras are called the Hero 7. They were launched in Nepal on Friday. There are 3 different variants of the Hero 7, White, Silver, and Black. All of them are coming to Nepal. The Hero 7 White costs Rs. 29,500, the Silver costs Rs. 36,500, and the Hero 7 Black costs Rs. 49,500.
The GoPro Hero 7 is similar in dimension to the Hero 6 and Hero 5. Not much has changed in terms of design which means that accessories that fit the Hero 6 or the Hero 5 will fit the Hero 7. Also, like the Hero 6, all the variants of Hero 7 are waterproof out of the box, have touchscreen LCDs, feature voice control, and can all automatically back up footage to GoPro’s cloud subscription service over wi-fi.
Hero 7 Black
Hero 7 Black is the most talked variant of all the new releases because of its new hypersmooth feature. It offers 4K video capture at up to 60 frames per second, super slow motion, and a suite of new features like live-streaming, a dramatic time-lapse mode, and radically improved digital image stabilization (the hypersmooth feature). The user interface on the rear touchscreen has been made to feel like a smartphone interface with large and intuitive icons. It feels much intuitive to use.
One of the big differences between the Hero 6 Black and the Hero 7 Black is the GP1 chip. It debuted in the Hero 6 Black after the company split with longtime chipmaker Ambarella. GoPro says it’s getting even more performance out of GP1 now, especially because the Hero 7 Black has more RAM than the last camera. This performance gain has made the hyper smooth possible which seriously makes the camera feel like it is being used in a gimbal when you are just carrying it on your hand or riding your bike. GoPro’s founder and CEO, Nick Woodman was filmed saying, “GoPro Hero 7 black is the Gimbal killer.”
The Hero 7 Black also has top-of-the-line specs. It shoots 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, 2.7K at up to 120 fps, and 1080p video at up to 240 fps. It captures 12-megapixel photos, with the option to shoot in RAW. It has Wi-Fi, GPS, face/smile and scene detection, and can filter out wind noise.
Hero 7 Silver and Hero 7 White
The two cheaper options, Silver and White, aren’t as capable, as they don’t use the GP1 chip. The Hero 7 Silver is similar to the Hero 6 black in terms of performance. It can shoot 4K video at 30 fps and 10-megapixel photos. It has limited slow-motion abilities, though, topping out at 60 fps overall while the Hero 7 Black has 240 fps at 1080p resolution. The Hero 7 White is even more limited; it maxes out at 1440p and can’t shoot 4K videos.
For the customers who are deciding whether to upgrade their previous gen GoPros, we will be bringing the full review of these action cams soon. So, stay tuned for that.
