Bangladesh to Purchase 9,000 MW Electricity from Nepal by 2040

Bangladesh has decided to purchase 9,000 MW electricity from Nepal by 2040. At the Power and Energy Summit held in Bangladesh, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina informed the audience there that her government had already started working on a plan to import electricity from Nepal.

She also informed that they had already signed a MoU with Nepal regarding the electricity import. The agreement was signed by the Bangladeshi Energy Minister Nasarul Hamid and the Nepali Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Barsha Man Pun.

During the summit, Minister Pun said that Nepal will generate 15,000 MW electricity in the next 10 years.

Since Bangladesh will also be importing electricity from Bhutan, she informed that the three countries Bangladesh, Bhutan, and India would be soon signing a trilateral understanding.
