22 December 2024 marked Huawei’s quarter century in involvement in Nepal’s ICT and telecom sectors for 25 years. On the same day, the Chinese tech giant also concluded its flagship CSR initiative and inaugurated the “Huawei Nepal Exhibition Center.”
Speaking on the significance of the day, Linhai — Board Director of Huawei South Asia said,
“Today marks two important milestones for Huawei in Nepal — the inauguration of our new Huawei Exhibition Center and the successful conclusion of the Seeds for the Future Nepal 2024 programme.
As we celebrate 25 years of impactful presence in Nepal, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering the next generation of digital leaders and advancing the country’s technological growth.”
Likewise, Huang Jun, CEO of Nepal expressed,
“For the last 25 years, our guiding motto has been ‘In Nepal, for Nepal.’ We have left no stone unturned in creating a meaningful impact on Nepal’s ICT development. As we know, youth are the seeds for our digital future, and we have worked hard to develop their ICT skills and competencies.
Moreover, we believe the goal of Digital Nepal can only be achieved through collaborative efforts. That’s why we’ve launched our exhibition centre — to foster knowledge-sharing. We have spent 25 years working to build a fully connected, intelligent Nepal, and this effort will continue.”
The Honourable Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, inaugurated the exhibition centre. It will serve as a hub for showcasing the latest trends and practices in the ICT sector.
Meanwhile, Huawei’s CSR programme “Seeds for the Future 2024” aimed to empower Nepali youth through ICT education and innovation. It included technical training, practical workshops masterclasses, and collaborative projects.
Over 300 applicants applied to the programme from which 30 students were shortlisted. Finally, Huawei selected six top-performing students to represent Nepal at the “Asia-Pacific Digital Talent Summit 2024” in China.
Distinguished guests, including government officials, industry leaders, and key stakeholders, attended the event on 22 December 2024. Various students were also in attendance and were recognised for their accomplishments and innovative ideas to create social impact with ICT.
The students won the “People’s Choice Award” in the Tech4Good competition (the regional phase of the Seeds for the Future programme) with their project idea — Ultra Care. It proposes setting up portable ultrasound machines for pregnant women in rural Nepal and using AI to monitor fetal health.
Given the scope of the idea and Huawei’s push to foster such talent, the Honourable Minister said,
“It is inspiring to see how Huawei has created a platform for our youth and encouraged them to develop innovative solutions with the potential to significantly impact Nepal’s socio-economic growth. I thank Huawei and our students for bringing Nepal’s pride to the global stage.
Moreover, Huawei has proven itself to be a responsible member of Nepal’s ICT and telecom sector, contributing in diverse ways. I believe the exhibition launched today will enlighten ecosystem stakeholders, foster common understanding, and help establish a shared goal for Digital Nepal.”
